P Activity
e The purpose of this activity is to teach students proper
d technique in reading and preparing to analyze a short story. This
a activity should be utilized at the beginning of a unit focusing on
g the short story genre. The activity starts out by pointing out
o some basic differences between short stories and other genres,
g utilizing a click and reveal format for the information on the
y slides. The activity then switches to a series of slides which
instruct students what to do before, during, and after reading a
short story. Students are able to interact with the Smart Board
by utilizing the drag and reveal aspects of the information on
the slides.
The next section of the activity asks a series of questions
concerning what has been learned thus far. A few students may
be chosen at this point to choose the answer to the questions,
which when clicked, reveal if the student has chosen correctly or
not. This is followed by a brief Matching Game in which
students attempt to correctly match a list of famous authors with
the title of their short story.
The penultimate section of the activity has students write about
their own experience with a particularly memorable short story.
The teacher can have students write this on a piece of paper,
incorporate it into a personal journal or blog, or complete the
assignment in another manner consistent with the class
structure.
The final part of the activity is comprised of a series of questions
using the SMART Response format. The SMART Response format
makes use of personal clickers (a remote style device that
records a student's alphanumeric answer) to record each
student's answer to a particular slide's multiple choice question.
As such, this final segment of the activity may be used as an
ungraded gauge of the students' understanding of the material,
or as a graded quiz.
