WA #2 Sustainability

In the Introduction to Sustainability, Christian R. Weisser depicts that sustainability is an

extremely significant concept towards our economy, society and environment. The author

explicitly defines sustainability as the capability to protect and maintain the resources and energy

of everything. As Weisser himself puts it, A thing or an activity is sustainable, it can be reused,

recycled or repeated in some way because it has not exhausted all the resources or energy

required to create it. Weisser goes in depth by saying that waste doesnt really exist in a

sustained society, because it would become material in the cycle of sustainability. According to

Weisser, for sustainability to really work, three pillars/building blocks must be included into the

this (sustainable) cycle. The first building block is social equality also know as the people-this is

interpreted as in everyone must be treated the same and fairly, which also incorporates the idea

that war and poverty must come to an end globally. The second pillar is environment/planet, this

means that every individual has a responsibility to look after the earth and environment. Thirdly,

economical viability, better know as profit the economy must manage the resources and

production of everything globally. As shown, the term sustainability has a much more complex

influence other than just nature and environment, it includes everyone (all around the world) to

have a sustainable future.

Sustainability is a crucial topic in todays society, Weisser states that this term is very

relevant to everyone through their education, friends or even their jobs. Within every field, an

individual can find sustainability within the work being done, hence one must understand

sustainability to its fullest to receive understanding in ones future life-personally and

professionally. However, sustainability is a very complex concept to understand fully, it has

multiple perspectives depending on the topic/subject. For instance, when speaking on a personal

level, sustainability is the community an individual is apart of, the economy/salary they get, even

their health, and etc-if any of these arent kept sustained / maintained then that hurts the

individual on a personal level. On the other hand, it can also improve an individuals life if they

try to include sustainability within everything they do. Another topic/subject, is on a political

level, sustainability is also all about profit and maintaining resources which means its a political

issue globally. Sustainability can be shown in many different shapes and forms depending on the

situation, nonetheless, mastering the true meaning of sustainability would help an individual in

all aspects of their life. This Demonstrates that if everyone globally was sustained economically,

socially, etc-then a great deal of problems will decrease. For instance, terrorism, poverty, war,

climate change, and etc-which illustrates that everyone hasnt really mastered the true

meaning/understanding of sustainability. Furthermore, this shows that sustainability is

surrounding everyone and its the first step for a big change in the world.
