UNIT TOPIC: Critiques

LESSON TITLE: How to Critique a Piece of Art

UNIT OBJECTIVES: Students will critique their Project 9.2 Project: Color Replacement
Self Portrait.
Students will use proficient communication and design skills to
conceive, develop, produce, edit critique and revise multimedia
projects that inform, educate or entertain while meeting accuracy,
project and deadline requirements.

INSTRUCTION

Students will watch When Did This Become Art?


Have students share with partners:
Do you agree with Andy Rooney? Why or why not?
ANTICIPATORY SET (DO NOW) What did you think of the public artwork?
Do you think there is a right or a wrong answer when critiquing
artwork?

Will walk around to check on students progress and to get real


ANTICIPATORY SET (DO NOW) time answers.
ASSESSMENT Will have a couple voice what they thought to the class
(informally)

MAIN ACTIVITY (MINI-LESSON) Review previous lesson by:


Teacher projects a piece of art and will walk students through how
to do a critique with students using graphics organizer.

ASSESSMENT

GUIDED PRACTICE Each table will have a printed picture of a piece of art.
The teacher will then post the same picture on the TV and work with
students using a graphics organizer.

GUIDED PRACTICE ASSESSMENT Verbal questions throughout creation:

How would you describe this work

Look, medium, color, texture, space

How did they create unity (color choices)

How did it make YOU feel

What is the artist trying to communicate

Once activity finishes, self assess using rubric

Which part of the criteria was the highest rating? Why?

How could you strengthen your critique with the lowest score?

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Worksheet that will be passed out, critiquing their own color
replacement project.
