Interactive Chemistry Technology

Name__________________________________ Date_____________ Class Period______

In this activity, you will be exploring various websites that have integrated technology,
to which will help you in your chemistry class endeavors!!! To help you explore these pieces of
tech, please follow the list of instructions below, and answer the following questions.
1. Go to http://graphoverflow.com/graphs/3d-periodic-table.html
a. On the top left hand corner of the screen, scroll over the tab called Alkali Earth
Metals.
b. Is hydrogen considered one of the alkali earth metals?____________
c. Scroll down to the tab Other Non-Metals.
d. What elements are highlighted with Other Non-
Metals?__________________________________________________________
e. Click on the element box of Yttrium.
f. What is the atomic weight of Yttrium according to the Atom
Info?____________________
g. While the Atom Info box is up for Yttrium, click on the Explore Atom button
on the bottom right hand corner of the box.
h. Go to the top right hand corner of the screen and click the slider Show Electrons
Shell Info
i. What letter is associated with the valence shell of Yttrium?_____________
j. Under the sliders on the top right hand corner of the screen, click on the little I
box.
k. What year did Niels Bohr propose the Bohr Model of the atom?______________

2. Go to https://ptable.com/
a. On the left hand top corner of the periodic table, a color legend can be seen to
demonstrate the physical states of the elements. Scroll over the four boxes to
observe physical phases of elements at absolute zero (0K or -273 C).
b. Using the temperature slider above the non-metals portion of the periodic table,
determine the temperature at which Yttrium becomes:
i. Liquid:______________C
ii. Gas:________________C
c. Click on the elemental box of Yttrium. Another window featuring information
from Wikipedia will come up. Scroll through the window and observe the
information presented.
i. What are the number of electrons per electron
shell?______________________
ii. Who first isolated elemental Yttrium and in what
year?____________________________________
iii. What are the known oxidation states?_____________________
iv. What is the atomic radius of one Yttrium atom?_________________
d. Close out of the Wikipedia window, and click on the tab Isotopes at the top of
the main screen.
e. Click on the Yttrium elemental box. You will notice a few other elemental boxes
show up and a legend appear the transition metals with Greek lettering. This
Greek lettering demonstrated different types of radiation that each isotope of
Yttrium will emit (the other boxes that show up are common isotopes).
f. List the atomic numbers, atomic masses, and type of radiation each isotope of
Yttrium emits.
Isotope Atomic Number Atomic Mass Radiation Type

3. Go to https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/new
a. Click on Chemistry on the left hand list on the screen
b. The next page will show a list of simulations in regards to chemistry that you can
play around with and help study. Scroll down the list and find the simulation
listed Build an Atom, and click on that simulation icon.
c. Click on the big play button.
d. Click the Atom box
e. Open the boxes on the right side of the simulation listed Net Charge and Mass
Number
f. Check the box on the bottom right of the screen labeled Stable/Unstable
g. Add one proton to the center of the model.
h. What element is being made?_____________________
i. What is the net charge of the element made?_______________
j. Is it stable?_______________
k. Now add two neutrons
l. What element is being made?________________
m. What is the net charge?____________________
n. What is the mass number?_________________
o. Is it stable?_________________
p. Add one more proton.
q. What is element is being made?______________
r. Is it stable?_________________

4. Pick another chemistry simulation on PHeT, and play around with it. Which one did you
pick and do like this website? Let me know below!
Simulations I recommend:
