IMPORTANT CAUTIONS

Removing the Micro QAR from the Aircraft:

To prevent damage from occurring to the microQAR unit please insure that power is not applied to
the unit by 1) cycling the power switch on the QAR interface box, or 2) pulling the breaker on the
aircraft. If damage does occur to the microQAR unit, please contact Product Support for assis-
tance.

Situating the Micro QAR:

For best operating results, L3AR recommends that the QAR installation be located in a pressurized
part of the aircraft.

Removing the CompactFlash Memory Card from the microQAR:

To prevent damage from occurring to the CompactFlash memory card please insure that power is
not applied to the Micro QAR unit. If damage does occur to the CompactFlash memory card,
please contact Product Support for assistance.

Using the CompactFlash Memory Card in a PC for Downloading:

When first inserting the Compact Flash Memory Card into a PC memory card reader, the PCs oper-
ating system may ask to format the Memory Card. DO NOT format the memory card as loss of
stored data will occur. If inserting a new blank Compact Flash Memory Card into a PC memory
card reader, the QAR Flight Data Processor Utility Software will not recognize the card. It will warn
you that There is no uQAR Memory Card in the Card Reader. You must then insert the removable
Compact Flash Memory Card into a QAR200 and use the ERASE function of the QAR utility to
format this card to be used with the uQAR Blank Compact Flash Cards are pre---formatted to a
Microsoft Disk Operation System (DOS Format). This format is not compatible with the uQAR.

Memory Modification for Removable Memory Configurations:

Please be aware that any modification of the sold as design of the microQAR will invalidate any
warranty or support agreement for the changed unit. Also be aware that these modifications can
possibly invalidate necessary paperwork regarding the Supplemental Type Certification of the unit
on an aircraft.
Modification of the microQARs memory is considered to have occurred if the memory card sold
with the unit is replaced with a memory card of a higher capacity, even if it is produced by the same
manufacturing company as the original card. In addition, replacing the supplied memory card with
a card of the same capacity but manufactured by a company different than the supplied memory
card will also be considered a modification.
L-3AR provides a basic part number for removable flash card models of QAR200. If you anticipate
the need for increasing the QAR memory capacity, this part number should be certified on the air-
craft.

THE CONTENTS OF THE

EQUIPMENT CAN BE
DAMAGED BY
STATIC ELECTRICITY.
PROPER HANDLING IS REQUIRED.

GENERAL
This product and related documentation must be reviewed for familiarization with
safety markings and instructions before operation.

This instrument was constructed in an ESD (electrostatic discharge) protected envi-

ronment. This is because most of the semiconductor devices used in this instrument
are susceptible to damage by static discharge.

Depending on the magnitude of the charge, device substrates can be punctured or

destroyed by contact or the mere proximity of a static charge. The results can cause
degradation of device performance, early failure, or immediate destruction.

These charges are generated in numerous ways such as simple contact, separation of
materials, and normal motions of persons working with static sensitive devices.

When handling or servicing equipment containing static sensitive devices, adequate

precautions must be taken to prevent device damage or destruction.

Only personnel who are thoroughly familiar with industry-accepted techniques for
handling static sensitive devices should attempt to service circuitry with these devices.

In all instances, measures must be taken to prevent static charge build-up on work
surfaces and persons handling the devices.

BEFORE APPLYING POWER

Verify that the product is set to match the line voltage and that the correct fuses are
installed.

Servicing instructions are for use by service-trained personnel only. To avoid dangerous
electric shock, do not perform any servicing unless qualified to do so.

Adjustments described in the manual are performed with power supplied to the
instrument while protective covers are removed. Energy available at many points may, if
contacted, result in personal injury.

2.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.1 microQAR Function

The primary function of the Micro Quick Access Recorder, microQAR, is to acquire data from a
FDAU stream and record it to a CompactFlash card. The microQAR is available in two
configurations, a non-removable media version (QAR10X--XX--XX) and a removable
CompactFlash version (QAR20X--XX--XX), refer to Figure 2. The microQAR may be
downloaded while installed in the aircraft using a built--in mini Universal Serial Bus (USB) port
interface to a portable computer. In addition, it may be removed from the aircraft and taken to
a ground station for flight data retrieval and analysis. The USB port may also be used to
supply +5Vdc operating power to the microQAR from a host computer when aircraft power is
not available. Optionally, the filled CompactFlash card may be removed from the microQAR
and replaced with a new one (QAR 20X--XX--XX only). The CompactFlash can then be
accessed through a standard PCMCIA interface reader on a personal computer using the
microQAR readout utility software for flight data retrieval.

2.2 microQAR Recording Duration

Recording duration for the microQAR is determined by the CompactFlash card capacity in
relation to the input data rate from the FDAU. The algorithm used to calculate the approximate
record time in hours is: Record Time approximately equal to160x(Media Capacity (MB)/Data
Rate (wps)). For example, a 128 MB CompactFlash card with an input data rate of 128 wps will
provide approximately 160 Hours of data; whereas, a 256 MB CompactFlash card with an input
data rate of 128 wps will provide about 320 hours of recorded data.

The Standard Aircraft Interface connector interfaces with a test connector in the cockpit that is
applied to the echo line of the FDR.

The Avionics Bay connector attaches to the FDR Playback connector on the FDAU.

The microQAR operates from 115 Vac, 400 Hz or 28Vdc and draws less than 2 watts of power.
An optically coupled data input circuit provides isolation and eliminates any interference to
aircraft systems. This input interface also maintains data symmetry throughput to the
microQAR and records ARINC 717 data at rates of 64 wps, 128 wps, 256 wps, and 512 wps,
or ARINC 429 data at rates of 32 wps, 64 wps, 128 wps, and 256 wps. The microQAR receives
power from the FDAU circuit breaker or from another power source specific to the aircraft
installation.

2.3.2 Mini Universal Serial Bus (USB) Interface

The USB port is a five-pin mini-B connector. The host computers USB port can supply
+5Vdc to power the microQAR if aircraft power is unavailable. This port is used to provide the
following functions for the microQAR:

(1) Download flight data from the microQAR.

(2) Set the Real--Time Clocks time and date.
(3) Erase flight data stored in the microQAR.
The microQAR USB port interfaces to a PCs USB port through a 6-ft. USB 2.0 Interface
Cable, L-3AR p/n: 17TES0090.

2.3.3 CompactFlash Interface

The CompactFlash interface is a 50--pin connector that accepts Type I (thin) CompactFlash
cards. The storage capacity of the microQAR is dependent on the CompactFlash card as
described in paragraph 2.2. The download speed is limited by the data transfer rate of the
CompactFlash. When the host computer uses a USB 2.0 interface, the data transfer rate is
approximately 24 Mbps (3 Mbytes/sec). A host computer using USB 1.1 has a data transfer
rate of approximately 5.6 Mbps (0.7 Mbytes/sec).

4.0 OPERATION

The microQAR operates from 115 Vac, 400 Hz or 28 VDC aircraft power and draws less than
2 watts. The input data source will either be from the Cockpit Flight Test connector, or from a
mating connector on the front panel of the FDAU. Depending on the part number of the
microQAR, the flash media card may be fixed (non-removable) in the case of the Model
QAR100 series, or removable in the case of the Model QAR200 series.

There are two LEDs visible on the flat side of the microQAR where the name label is located.
Upon power up of the microQAR, both LEDs will momentarily illuminate two times, and then
go out, indicating normal operation. Refer to Figure 1 for locations of the LEDs.

If the microQAR should stop recording data with power applied for any reason, then the amber
FAULT LED will light. In this case the microQAR should be pulled from the aircraft and
returned to L-3AR for repair.

If the flash memory card becomes full, then the amber MEMORY FULL LED will light and
recording will stop (only occurs with the non-wrap versions). If using the Model QAR100
non-removable media type, the CompactFlash memory card (CF) may be downloaded and
erased using the microQAR Flight Data Processor software utility program through the USB
port. Or if using the Model QAR200, the CF may be removed and replaced at the aircraft and
taken to a download station.

4.1 Data Download using USB Port

The flight data may be directly downloaded on the aircraft or bench by using a PC, laptop, or
PDA running Microsoft Windowst with a standard USB port interface (ver. 1.1 or 2.0) and the
microQAR Flight Data Processor software utility program provided by L-3 Communications,
P/N 883E2822-03 or above. For ARINC429--capable QAR part numbers, Part Number
883E2822--04 or above must be used. Contact L-3 Sales for details about how to order the
latest software. When power is not directly applied to the microQAR on the aircraft, or when
the microQAR is removed from the aircraft, the USB port will supply +5 Vdc operating voltage
to the microQAR.

Note: When using a USB 1.1 port on your PC with the microQAR, it is normal to receive
a HI--SPEED USB Device plugged into non--HI--SPEED USB Hub status message.
This message will not affect functionality and will only limit the data transfer to a
speed compatible with the USB 1.1 standard.

4.8 Processing Flight Data From microQAR

Once the data has been extracted from the microQAR and downloaded to a PC, the data can
then be processed for use in either 3rd party data analysis systems that accept 16--bit
unpacked binary data frames, 16--bit packed binary data frames, or ROSE raw data frames.

4.8.1 Unpacked Binary Raw Data Output File Types

Unpacked flight data stores each 12--bit data word as the least significant 12 bits of each
16--bit word in the file. For ARINC 573/717 data, each consecutive sixty--four (64) 16--bit
words forms a subframe.

The UNPACKED format is illustrated below, where Word 1 is the oldest word and word 4 is the
most recent word. Within each word, the least significant bit is the oldest data bit. The
resulting output file will have a file extension of .upk.

4.8.2 Packed Binary Raw Data Output File Types

Packed flight data stores four (4) 12--bit data words in three (3) 16--bit words. For ARINC
573/717 data, each consecutive forty--eight (48) 16--bit words form a subframe.

The PACKED format is illustrated below, where Word 1 is the oldest word, word 4 is the most
recent word. As with the Unpacked data described above, within each word, the least
significant bit is the oldest data bit. The resulting output file will have a file extension of .pak.

4.8.3 ROSE Raw Data

The ROSE raw frame type data file does not contain a header. Each 12--bit data word is stored
into one 16--bit word, and is least significant bit (LSB) aligned. The raw data is written in random
access (binary) format where each record length is the same as the words per frame (or words per
second) value plus 1 word from frame type. The resulting output file will have a file extension of
.dat.

4.9 Working with CompactFlash Cards

The microQAR FDP Main menu provides a means of accessing the Data located on a
CompactFlash used as the removable media in the QAR20X--XX--XX model series. With
these models, the CompactFlash card can be removed from the microQAR and inserted into
any CompactFlash internal or external reader.

Note: The microQAR uses a proprietary media format on the CompactFlash cards which
makes the cards unrecognizable to Windows. It is not possible to store non--mi-
croQAR related files on these cards nor is it possible to move files onto these
cards through Windows.

Note: Due to the proprietary media format it is possible that Windows will ask the user
to format the CompactFlash card when it is first inserted it into the computer. DO
NOT format this card as stored data on the card will then be lost.

Note: If inserting a new blank CompactFlash Memory Card into a PC memory card read-
er, the microQAR Flight Data Processor Utility Software will not recognize the
card. It will warn you that There is no microQAR Memory Card in the Card Read-
er. You must then insert the removable CompactFlash Memory Card into a
QAR200 and use the ERASE function of the microQAR utility to format this card to
be used with the microQAR.

Note: Blank CompactFlash Cards are pre-formatted to a Microsoft Disk Operation Sys-
tem (DOS Format). This format is not compatible with the microQAR.

Once the CompactFlash card is inserted into the reader the microQAR software will recognize
the card as if it was a microQAR. All other downloading procedures can be performed as
detailed in Section 4.7. The sole difference is to use the Operations listed under Card Reader
instead of the ones listed under microQAR. See Figure 22.

Note: The STC for each microQAR unit is memory--specific. Replacing a memory card
with another card will void the STC for the unit. Please contact L--3AR Product
Support before changing a memory card.

6.0 REPAIR

This section is intended to contain information required to restore a worn or damaged part to a
serviceable condition. However, microQAR is a completely solid-state device that does not
contain any electro-mechanical moving parts. The microQAR has been designed as
maintenance-free unit which makes extensive use of surface mount technology (SMT). The
repair of printed wiring assemblies (PWAs) containing SMT components requires specialized
factory equipment, training, and techniques, therefore, such PWAs are not field-repairable.
Only the L--3AR Repair Station, FAA: LD7R612J; EASA.145.4620 is authorized to repair the
microQAR to component level in accordance with L--3AR Factory test, calibration and repair
specifications.

As a result, the microQARs maintenance philosophy is replacement of a failed unit. There are
no special calibration or overhaul requirements for the microQAR.

When it has been determined that a microQAR is faulty, the entire unit should be removed and
returned to the L--3 Communications, Aviation Recorders Repair Station for repair or
replacement. Attempts to repair the microQAR will void the warranty.

CAUTION: THE microQAR CIRCUIT BOARDS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ELEC-

TROSTATIC DESTRUCTION (ESD). PRIOR TO HANDLING PWAs, EN-
SURE PROPER PERSONNEL GROUNDING TECHNIQUES ARE USED.
ENSURE THAT UNITS ARE PLACED INTO STATIC SHIELDING CON-
DUCTIVE BAGS WHEN HANDLING OR STORING.

ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST

1. GENERAL
This section contains the following sections: introduction, equipment designator list, nu-
merical index, and detailed parts list. The introduction of this section describes usage of
the IPB, a listing of abbreviations, and a list of vendor names, addresses, and codes per
the current issue of Federal Supply Code for Manufacturers, catalog handbook H41.
The Equipment Designator Index provides a cross reference from manufacture reference
designator to manufacturing part number. The Numerical Index provides a numerical list-
ing of all manufacturing part numbers.

2. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Illustrated Parts List is to assist maintenance and supply personnel in
requisitioning, storing, issuing and identifying parts to maintain the microQAR Quick Ac-
cess Recorder. This Illustrated Parts List is not to be taken as the authority for the proce-
dure of assembly or disassembly. Overhaul or repair should be done by authorized per-
sonnel only.

3. ABBREVIATIONS
The following abbreviations are used in this section:
Abbreviation Meaning
AR As Required
NHA Next Higher Assembly
RF Reference

4. EQUIPMENT DESIGNATOR INDEX

The Equipment Designator Index is an index of designators assigned to electrical parts as
shown in electrical wiring and schematic diagrams. Since Level II repair is the mainte-
nance philosophy of the microQAR, there are no Equipment designators listed.

Rev. 05 165E2810---00

5. NUMERICAL INDEX
The Numerical Index is a complete listing of parts included in the Detail Parts List, cross
referenced to the applicable figure and item number, L-3s part numbers, the manufactur-
ers part numbers and total quantity required.

Part numbers are arranged in an alphanumerical sequence beginning at the extreme left
hand position and continue from left to right, one position at a time. The order to prece-
dence in beginning the part number arrangement is as follows:
A. Letters A through Z (Alphabetical Os are considered as numerical zeros).
B. Numerals 0 through 8.
Part number entry is limited to a single line and does not exceed fifteen characters.

The FIGURE number and ITEM number columns contain the figure and item number(s)
for all parts listed. When more than one figure and item number is shown for the same
part number, the part number is not repeated.

6. DETAIL PARTS LIST

The Detail Parts List consists of illustrations and columnar parts breakdown of the compo-
nent and all assemblies, subassemblies, and parts that can be disassembled, repaired
and reassembled, or replaced. Items that are riveted, welded or spun over are not listed.
Parts made of bulk stock such as wire, tape or bonding braid are also not listed. Illustra-
tions are each assigned a figure number, commencing with Figure 1 and progressing in
sequence.

The FIGURE AND INDEX NUMBER column reflects the assigned figure number of the
illustration in which the item is shown and the item number listed on the illustration. Fig-
ure numbers are shown for the first entry of each figure and at the top of each subse-
quent column. When there is more than one type of subassembly for the same function
additional figures are included with the same number, but followed by an additional alpha
designator (such as A, B, etc.).

Each part number listed in the Detail Parts List is assigned an index number. Index num-
bers begin with number 1 for each illustration and in broken sequence to facilitate the in-
sertion of new items which are not variants of existing items. Items listed but not illus-
trated are identified by a dash to the left of the index number.

The PART NUMBER column contains the manufacturers part number when the part is
purchased from a source other than Aviation Recorders, or the Aviation Recorders part
number for those parts which must be purchased from Aviation Recorders Division.
When the manufacturers part number is used for any parts, the Aviation Recorders num-
ber is also shown enclosed in parentheses in the NOMENCLATURE column. When stan-

165E2810---00 Rev. 05
Page 52 Apr. 01/09
Installation & Operation MicroQAR
Instruction Manual

dard parts (such as MS, AN, RC, CP, etc.) are used, vendor codes are not assigned to
these parts. However, for nonstandard parts the vendor code is assigned in the NO-
MENCLATURE column and is preceded by the letter V. It corresponds to the Federal
Supply Code for Manufacturers, (FSCM) now known as Commercial and Government En-
ity (CAGE) as listed in Cataloging Handbook H4/H8.

When a part has multiple vendors, all part numbers are listed in the PART NUMBER col-
umn. The first vendor will be assigned an item number and each subsequent part num-
ber is assigned the same item number with an alpha variant.

The NOMENCLATURE column describes the part or assembly. Nomenclature wording is

arranged so that the identifying noun or key word is always the first part of the descrip-
tion; this is followed by modifying words. Standard abbreviations are used as necessary.
Assemblies which are not broken down within a listing but which are covered by a sepa-
rate figure will carry the notation (SEE FIG. FOR DETAIL BREAKDOWN). The listing
of the assembly in the breakdown figure will carry the reference (SEE FIG. FOR NHA).
If the vendor is not Aviation Recorders, the manufacturers vendor code may be included
in parentheses in this column.

The indenture system, provided by the numbers 1 through 6 in the heading, shows the
relationship of one part to another; for example, a part listed under indenture 3 is a com-
ponent of the assembly listed under indenture 2 immediately above it. Items used to
attach parts or assemblies to each other are designated ATTACHING PARTS and are
listed immediately following the item or items they attach. The symbol * * * denotes the
end of attaching parts.

The EFFECTIVITY CODE column establishes parts relationship with units or assemblies
which are essentially the same but have variations. These units or assemblies are the
lead times on each figure. These units or assemblies are assigned reference letters such
as A, B, C, D, etc. Parts which are not common to all configurations but are associated
with one or more of the coded lead items carry the letter or letters assigned to the lead
item with which it is associated. If a part is common to all lead items, the EFFECTIVITY
CODE column is blank.

The UNITS PER ASSY column lists the quantity of the item required in one assembly in
which it is a component. It is, therefore, not necessarily the total quantity of the part re-
quired in the complete equipment; the equipment total can be found in the Numerical In-
dex. The term RF denotes that the assembly has been previously listed in the parts
breakdown.

7. MANUFACTURERS CODE
Due to the Level--2 maintenance philosophy used with the microQAR, all spare parts will
be ordered through L--3 Communications. L3AR Vendor Code, manufacturer name and
address, as listed in the Federal Supply Codes for Manufacturers Cataloging Handbook
H4/H8, Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) codes, (formerly FSCM), and/or the
NATO Code as applicable (Ref. ATA Spec. 200), is listed below. The CAGE code is the
vendor (V) code listed in parentheses in the NOMENCLATUE column of the Detailed
Parts List.
