The CHR RIST LPCpluss SCADA so oftware bundles the opperation of all

The "Prog gram" mode e offers the opportunity y to let the ffreeze-dryin
ng process
run in an automated manner un nder reprodu ucible cond itions. The freeze-
drying pro ograms/reciipes for this s purpose are also creaated, edited d, and
managed by way of tthe LPCplus software. They T are higghly configuurable and,
thereby, enable
e a cu
ustomised adaptation
a o the freezinng and drying
of
characterristics to thee product in question. Various
V optiional monitooring
paramete ers enable th he system to t react automatically tto deviations during
the proce ess run, therreby ensuring the optim mum protecction of the product.
p
There is also
a a "Mannual" mode for the deve elopment annd optimisa ation of
processes.
An anima ated schema atic system diagram visualises thee status of the t
individual freeze-drye er compone ents. The se et and actuaal values ca an be
displayed d in numericcal or graphical form. Process
P messsages are displayed
in pop-up p windows. A Alarms are displayed as a plain textt in an alarmm list and
they mustt be acknow wledged by the user. In n addition, aall message es and
alarms as s well as thee informatio
on concernin ng the proggress of the process
and user intervention ns are entered into the process evvent list (audit trail)
together with
w a time stamp. The e process ev vent list alsoo includes the
t values
of all of th
he paramete ers. Apart frrom the con ntinuous reccording of th he
measurem ment valuess, the value es of selecte ed sensors ccan also be e entered
into the process eve nt list at inte ervals that can
c be definned as desiired.
All of the process da ata (process s event list and
a measurrement valu ues) are
written intto a shared record file in binary fo orm. During this proces ss, they are
compress sed by way of a specia al algorithm in order to eensure optimum data
integrity. The origina al data can be
b viewed, printed, or eexported on nly via the
documentation functtion of the LPC L plus softw ware.
The LPCplus p user admministration with six configurable, hierarchic useru levels
enables a highly spe ecific access s managem ment.

The "toolb bar" on the right-hand side of the screen is thhe central control

individual functional areas of the e software. In general, after a buttton has
been click ked, a correesponding window

screen. This
T windoww offers detaailed functio

open simultaneouslyy in the "worrk area" where they caan be scaled d and

Some win ndows (e.g. "Process Recording")

in front off the LPCpluss screen. Att the same time,
t these windows block the
LPCplus sc creen until tthey are clo

If several freeze-drye ers are connected to thhe SCADA PC and if processp

"Select Unit" for a lon nger periodd of time (> 3 seconds) enables the user to

When the e product ha as been froz zen to the selected

First, the chamber iss evacuated d to the sele

T the
product iss provided w with the neccessary sub blimation ennergy by hea ating the
shelves, while
w it is ke
ept in the fro

d to the vvacuum. Th he
temperatu ure in the p roduct is deetermined based
b on thee vapour prressure
curve for ice. The ice e condense er is cooled to the lowesst possible
temperatu ure in orderr to extract and
a bind the e water vappour that is released
during thee sublimatio on.
The followwing screen nshot shows s the param

Safety prressure: Si nce the tem mperature in n the producct is determmined by

the chamber vacuum m and sincee a loss of va
acuum, e.g . if the shelv ves are
heated tooo quickly, ccan cause thhe product to thaw, thee monitoring g of the
vacuum is s of utmost importance e in view of the productt safety.
In order to
o activate thhe continuo
ous vacuum m monitoringg function fo or a
section, th
he parametter "Safety pressure"
p (4
4) of this seection is use
ed to define
a maximu um permiss ible chambe er pressure
e (see the exxample and d table
below).
The contrrol system ccontinuously y compares s the currennt measured d chamber
pressure to the speccified "Safetty pressure"" during the section. Th he shelf
heater will not be acttivated untill the chamb
ber pressuree is below th he "Safety
pressure"". If the chammber presssure then ris
ses above thhe "Safety pressure",
p
an alarm will be gene erated and the shelf heeater will bee deactivateed.
Because of the heat withdrawal due to the sublimationn, the produ uct cools
down. The heater wi ll be reactivvated when the definedd "Safety prressure" is
reached again.
a In ord ctivate the continuous vvacuum monitoring
der to deac
function, set the para ameter "Saffety pressurre" to "Off".

Example (frreezing point o of the product: -5C):

It is recommmended to free eze the product to >10K bellow its freezingg point.
The recomm mend drying vvacuum can be e found on thee vapour presssure curve forr ice at the
temperature e value that iss 10K below th he freezing point. The "Safetty pressure" is s located at
the tempera ature value tha at is 5K higher.
At this dryin
ng vacuum and d if the shelve
es are heated slowly, the tem mperature in the
t product
cannot rise above a value e that is 10K below
b the freezing point. If tthe shelves arre heated too
quickly, the heater will bee switched off when a pressure is reachedd that corresponds to a
product temmperature of 5 K below the frreezing point. In this case, tthere is still a safety
s
margin of 5K before the p products starts s to thaw.
