Lesson Plan Day 1

Materials/Resources: Paper, pencil, and the book The Giving Tree

Overview/Purpose: To have students read a story and find the meaning of the story, give
examples from story to support answer and apply it to how it can be used in everyday life.
Learning Objectives:
Learn how to find a purpose is in a story.
Students will earn how to expand on their idea by providing at least two reasons why they feel
this way.
Students will also learn how to go beyond just what is in the book and look for deeper meanings

Academic Standards Addressed:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.6
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or
describe. DOK Level:1
Overview of Student Activity:
Tell all the kids to gather around for a surprise reading
We will start by reading the story together as a class. I will have the book and read the
pages aloud and show the students the page when I finish reading.
We will then go over it as a class and discuss some key points in the story. I will call on
some kids to answer what they thought of the book. DOK Level 2
We will have students write a purpose that they took from the reading and provide two
reasons for why they came up with it. (Why did you come up with this?) I will walk around to
see if any kids need help with understanding the theme or providing reasons. DOK Level 3
We will then have each student share what he/she wrote by calling on each student to
read the theme he/she came up with and give the two reasons they decided on that theme.
Then the class will vote on what is the biggest theme from the story. We will put the top
themes on the board then each student will write on a piece of paper which theme they like best
then I will write the theme on the board.

Assessment: Once we finish reading the story, the kids will then have ten minutes to write what a
theme is and why. Then they will write a conclusion on what he/she can do to apply this purpose
to their lives.

Modifications/Accommodations (include ELLs): Oral and written instructions will be provided.

Trouble Shooting: If students are having problems with trying to find a theme I will go around
and help the students find one by asking what their favorite part was in the story. Then hopefully
each kid will be able to find a theme, give reasoning from the story to support the theme, and
then how to use it in life.

The goal of this activity: To not only teach for a standard or for a quiz, but to learn how to
become productive citizens in the real world.

Lesson Plan Day 2

Materials: Board

Purpose: for students to be able to analyze how characters in a story truly impact the message
that is being proposed in the story.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

Assessment: As a class, we will discuss the two characters in The Giving Tree and analyze
what both characters did and how they affect the purpose of the story that we came up with
yesterday.

Activity: I will call the class together and we will discuss the book again and go over the points
in the story
- Then we will discuss each character and discuss how they acted in the story. I will call on
students and they will answer ways they acted and if it was good or bad.
- We will then look at how both characters influence the theme of the story. I will ask what
the tree did well and what the boy did wrong.
- After we answer questions I will show the students how these actions affect the purpose
that was shown in the book.

Learning Objective: To be able to understand characters moods and emotions and see how
their actions affect the purpose of the story.

The goal of this is to make students realize how much characters impact a story and how you
should look to recognize how their actions change the story.

Lesson Plan Day 3

Materials: Paper
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and
relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Assessment: Have students remember a trip where something bad happened. This will help the
students understand how characters affect a story and is also a fun activity.

Activity: I will have the students brainstorm on a trip where something bad happened. I will give
an example and tell the story of how I was going to Disney World and we realized we had left
our bands to get into the park back home. Then I will tell the students to write some ideas down
on a worksheet I pass out which will outline the ideas I want the students to put in the paper. I
will say to write whered you go, what happened, who were the characters, and how they learned
from the challenge.

The goal is to have the students start to develop skills in writing and speaking since that is a huge
part of developing life skills.

Lesson Plan Day 4

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and

relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Assessment: Students will start writing down their story and discussing it with a partner. They
will have to give the place they went to, who they went with, and also what the challenge or
incident was.

Activity: I will give back the outline the students, then tell the students to share the story with a
buddy to practice speaking the story but I will have them do it quietly. I will walk around and
hear the students share their stories and see if there is anything the students will need to improve
on. Then after that Ill tell the students to be prepared to share their story tomorrow!!!!!!!

The goal is to make the kids ready to be able to get up in front of the class and be able to speak.

Lesson Plan Day 5

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and

relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Purpose: Have students be able to speak to a group clearly and precisely, and with confidence.
Activity: I will have students pick a number from the basket and that number decides when each
student will share their story. I will have the students in a circle and have an area where the
student will present.

The goal of this is to make the students comfortable with being able to speak in front of people
and to also feel happy with the environment of the classroom.
