WARSAS H MARITIME ACADEMY

Course Information - STCW II/2 Chief Mate/Master (Post Foundation Degree

Route)
for candidates who successfully completed a Deck Officer Cadetship via the Foundation Degree (FdSc) route.

Course Description

This course enables candidates who have successfully completed a Deck Officer cadetship via the Foundation
Degree (FdSc) route to achieve Chief Mate and Master certification. Please note that candidates who completed
their FdSc cadetships at another UK maritime college will be required to undertake an FdSc Command Management
unit with students on the Chief Mate examination route, although they do not need to sit the Scottish
Qualifications Authority (SQA) examinations.
Candidates will receive a number of presentations designed to update them on current marine issues and
legislation, and prepare them for the MCA Signals examination and MCA Oral examination. The NAEST and HELM
(Management Level) courses are also part of the programme.
Candidates must have completed 12 months watchkeeping service while holding an OOW unlimited
II/1 Certificate of Competency (CoC), and hold a valid personal medical fitness certificate recognised by the MCA.
Overseas students must have studied in the UK and obtained a Foundation Degree to be eligible to undertake
this route.
Candidates must also hold STCW certificate in Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship and NAEST (M) before
taking their MCA Orals, and should ensure that they meet relevant pre-requisite requirements. Both of these
courses can be undertaken at WMA outside of the main course.
Once a Chief Mate CoC has been achieved, candidates must complete 36 months watchkeeping service while
holding an OOW unlimited II/1 Certificate of Competency before undertaking examination for Master
certification. This period may be reduced to 24 months if at least 12 months of such seagoing service has been
served as Chief Mate while holding a Chief Mate unlimited II/2 CoC.
