Q1. Write a general Matlab code to design a shaft for steady torsion & fully reversed bending
case, as per the ASME method (refer "Section 9.8: Shaft Design" of the text book Machine Design
by R. L Norton, Second Edition).
Further, test the above developed program for designing the following stepped shaft.
Material: Low-carbon, cold rolled steel (Sut = 450 MPa, Sy= 262 MPa),
Surface condition: Machined finished,
Temperature: Room temperature,
Reliability requirement: 50%,
Notch radius: 0.254 mm,
Factor of safety: 2.5,
Stress concentration factor: 3.0 in bending and 2.0 in torsion, and
Loading condition: (i) Alternating Bending moment component: 7.5 N-m,
(ii) Mean torque component: 9 N-m. (30M)
