Assessment and Education for dysfunctional breathing patternsusing cutting edge

biofeedback technology

Do you have
hidden
hyperventilation and imbalance of CO2 and O2 resulting in poor oxygenation?

Do your dysfunctional Breathing be at the root of your

Sleep Disorder?

Find out quickly and easily w ith Capnograph CapnoTrainer

the ultimate tool that assess and train you for efficient
breathing

Why breathing patterns is so important?

Breathing is mainstream; it is not alternative or

complementary.

Easily learn belly breathing and overcome poor

breathing patterns w hich may possibly be a result of learned
behavior from the stress of living in our modern w orld.
Rosemary MacG regor, RN, MS, expert on the use of the CapnoTrainer, relates that by the age of
3 most children are hyperventilating

Hyperventilation is hidden, in most cases undiagnosed, and appeared to be the root of all
the diseases of civilization. 100% of people suffering from health issues are hyper ventilators. The
breathing retraining exercises are designed to reduce depth of breathing w hile in a state of
relaxation.

I dentify dysfunctional breathing habits and their effects on health and performance:
shortness of breath, breathlessness, chest
tightness/pressure, chest pain, feelings of
suffocation, sw eaty palms, cold hands, tingling of
the skin, numbness, heart palpitations, irregular
heart beat, anxiety, apprehension, emotional
outbursts, stress, tenseness, fatigue, w eakness,
exhaustion, dry mouth, nausea, light-headedness,
dizziness, fainting, black-out, blurred vision,
confusion, disorientation, attention deficit, poor
thinking, poor memory, poor concentration,
impaired judgment, problem solving deficit, reduced pain threshold, headache, trembling,
tw itching, shivering, muscle tension, spasm, stiffness, abdominal cramps, and bloating.

I n predisposed individuals, overbreathing (CO2 deficit) can trigger or exacerbate

acute and chronic conditions:

phobias (e.g., public speaking), migraine phenomena, hypertension, attention disorder, asthma
attacks, angina attacks, heart attacks, panic attacks, hypoglycemia, ischemia (e.g., tissue hypoxia),
depression, epileptic seizures, sexual dysfunction, sleep disturbances, allergy, irritable bow el
syndrome, repetitive strain injury, and chronic fatigue.

According to recent medical studies, breathing volume of everybody who has any health issue or
illness is indicated as excessive. Majority of people are not able to feel it. But consequences of
hyperventilation are really grave. As world famous prominent physicist Prof. Buteyko stated in
his works There are no illnesses but hyperventilation. All known illnesses are just symptoms of
hyperventilation.

Capnography

Capnometry is the science of measuring partial

pressure of CO 2 (PCO 2 ) during respiration. This is
not new technology. Capnometers are used
w orldw ide in emergency medicine, in critical care,
and during surgery for monitoring purposes; these
are medical applications.

breathing habits

A break-through product! The ultimate in

breathing education!

The CapnoTrainer provides immediate and first

hand biofeedback information to the observer about air flow and breathing efficiency. G asping and
other breathing irregularities can immediately be seen.
The Bohr Effect states: the low er the partial
pressure of CO 2 in arterial blood, the tighter the
bond betw een hemoglobin and oxygen. So
PaCO 2 is the limiting factor in breathing efficiency.
I t w ill determine how efficiently the oxygen we
breathe is released from our blood to our
cells and brain for energy production.

Which brain is yours?

I ncreased levels of CO2 and carbonic acid in

the body (up to a point) tend to promote the
following effects:

increased transfer of oxygen via the lungs to the

blood (bronchodilitation)
increased blood flow to the brain and heart
(vasodilation)
increased transfer of oxygen from haemoglobin in the
body cells (Bohr effect)
increased calmness of the nervous system (pH effect
on nerves)
decreased hunger (pH effect on desire for acidic
foods)

The breathing and posture assessment

The purpose of a Breathing and Posture Assessment is to establish how functionally a person is
operating.

The majority of chronic complaints are not caught from another person. They are the
consequence of w hat a person is DOI NG . I f one is able to see that they are functioning sub-
optimally then there is the potential for them to change w hat they are DOI NG and

so be able to change the outcome.

POSTURE PHOTOG RAPHS

The patient is photographed against a grid to determine to w hat

degree they are out-of-balance. This show s tilted shoulders,
forw ard head posture and a range of other bio-mechanical
anomalies.

BREATHI NG MECHANI CS

The patient is observed to establish w hether breathing is primary or

secondary, w hether there is sighing, frequent deep breaths and
mouth breathing w hen talking.

RATE

This is produced as a
graph as image 1
above.

G UI DED
BREATHI NG AND
A-B-A
CHALLENG E

The patient is manually guided through slow er and gentler breaths and can see the graph change
as they change their breathing. A visualization challenge takes them to a stressful situation and
they can observe how this changes their breathing pattern.

POSTURAL CHANG E

A simple change in their sitting position demonstrates how better use of the diaphragm improves
overall breathing efficiency.

Put the Sparkle Back I nto Y our Life.

Just as CO 2 puts sparkleinto sparkling w ater and

soda pop, CO 2 puts the sparkle into our blood by
promoting the release of oxygen into our cells.

Capnotrainer Restricted Use:

The CapnoTrainer is an educational instrument

designed for enhancing performance through
learning and teaching good breathing behavior. I t is
not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment.
O verbreathing is undoubtedly an insidious and
debilitating response to everyday challenges,
insidious because its presence goes unrecognized
and its effects unidentified. I n fact, surveys suggest
that 10 percent or more of the US population
suffers from chronic overbreathing and that 60
percent of all ambulance calls in major US cities are
the result of overbreathing (Fried 1999)! For every
person who shows up in emergency, how many
more show up in physicians offices with
unexplained symptoms? For every person who goes
to see a physician, how many more simply go to
work? And for everyone who reports a medical symptom how many more suffer with
performance deficits? O verbreathing is a behavior that precipitates changes in chemistry that can
mediate these unexplained symptoms, misunderstood performance deficits, and acute and
chronic effects of stress. The resulting effects of hypocapnia are profound and deserve full
attention Dr. Peter M. Litchfield, Ph.D. in California Biofeedback. Vol. 21, No. 3 (Fall 2005)
