Choose two out of the following three problems (20 points each):

13. When light passes through a prism, the angle that the refracted ray makes relative to the incident ray
is called the deviation angle (the angle between the dotted line and the outgoing ray in the figure below).
In the picture, the light ray inside the prism is horizontal; you may assume this is true for part (a) but not
for part (b).

a) Show that the index of refraction of the prism is related to the angles and by

sin 12 ( + )
n= (10 points)
sin( /2)

b) If the apex angle of the prism is = 72 , what is the minimum incident angle for a ray if it is to emerge
from the opposite side (i.e., not be totally internally reflected) given n = 1.58? Note that we want the
angle with respect to the normal of the incident ray (and the refracted ray after passing into the prism
is not necessarily horizontal). (10 points)

14. A diverging lens is made with glass of index of refraction n = 1.58. The radii of curvature are given as
follows:

a) What is the focal length of this lens? (5 points)

b) Suppose an object is placed 40cm in front of this lens. Where is the location of the image? Is it upright
or inverted? Real or virtual? What is the magnification? Use ray tracing as well to show the path of
light rays after going through the lens. (10 points)

c) Will this lens help a nearsighted or a farsighted person? Where will the lens place an object at infinity?
(5 points)

15. The following figure shows two sources S1 and S2 that emit radio waves of wavelength in all directions.
The sources are exactly in phase and are separated by a distance equal to 1.5 . The vertical broken line is
the perpendicular bisector of the distance between the sources. Also, the distance from S2 to the start of
paths 2 and 3 is 1.5 .

For the following questions dealing with interference of the sources, assume that the intensity of the sources
does not fall o with distance.

a) If we start at the indicated start point and travel along path 1, does the interference produce a maximum
all along the path, a minimum all along the path, or alternating maxima and minima? (5 points)

b) If we start at the other point o to the right and travel along path 2 (along an axis through the
sources), how far do we have to walk before we hit the first point of constructive interference? How
about destructive interference? If we start at a point of constructive/destructive interference, you may
put walk a distance 0. (5 points)

c) Repeat part (b), but along path 3 (perpendicular to the axis through the sources). If it seems like the
algebra might take too long, just set up an equation and say what variable youd solve for. (5 points)

d) Suppose we label another path: path 4. Path 4 has the same starting location as path 1, but deviates
from path 1 by an angle . What must be so that there exist points on this path that have constructive
interference? (5 points)
