Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using scientific classification
procedures.
a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how
vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal) using data from multiple
sources
Technology Standard Addressed:
ISTE5: Computational Thinker: Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving
problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions. Students:
b. collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various
ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
I would like to use Insructional software like BrainPop to help me introduce the subject of how we classify
living organisms into groups. Then I would go over what they learned by having them do a fun activity like
putting pictures of animals into the right group, or have them go on a computer simulation to have them
explore more into the subject. Once I feel they have an understanding of what vertebrates and invertebrates
are I will introduce them to Socrative where they will take a quiz.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will log into the class iPads using
the code the teacher has given to them. The teacher will have full control when giving the assessment this
means that students cant move backward or forward to other questions when doing the assessment. She will

give students enough time for each student to answer the questions unless a student is personally holding
back the class she will move on to the next question. The last question will be student lead because it Is short
answer response. The assessment shouldnt take more than 15 minutes to do.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?
I would so students can see what they got right or wrong, and engage in group discussion as to why they think
they got it wrong or reflect why they think they got it wrong.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
I will use the results to see what questions students did not understand, and if they need to be re-engaged in
another activity or strategy to help them understand the content.
How will the data be used? The data collected will be for teacher and student use only. It will determine if
the teacher should move on to another lesson, or if the students need to be re-engaged in a different lesson.
Also, it will help the teacher differentiate assessment if select students struggle with certain types of
questions, for instance: Billy has trouble getting true/false questions correct. However, if a student is holding
up the class multiple times, and he is unable to answer questions because of this the teacher will show data
to parents. I would only show results of class unless it was anonymous because I want to be able to create a
safe environment for my shy students. If I did show data I would want my students to discuss why they think
it was the right answer, or why they think they got it wrong. I personally think that students should have
access to the results/data so they can see progress they have made. Not all assessments have to be graded,
they can purely show personal improvement.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I hope to learn where my students stand in the class as
a whole, and whether or not my teaching style is beneficial to them. With the activity I want students to know
how to group animals according to their physical characteristics. By using a SRS I will find out what animal
group they might have trouble with knowing, or what specific students are struggling. My ultimate goal with
using SRS is for my shy or unsure students to feel like they are in a safe and anonymous environment.
