Reading List by Jessica Lewis

Infant

When looking for and buying books for your infant, it is important to buy books that are appropriate for
your baby. This means getting books that your baby can touch and interact with. Touch and feel books
are great for infants. They allow the baby to use their hand to explore whats on the page and feel
different textures. It is also important to look for books that are either fabric or board books which
allows your infant to turn the pages and interact. Books that have pictures of babies are also great to
read to your infant because they are seeing someone who looks like them and can relate to the
photograph they are being shown.

Toddler

When looking for and buying books for your toddler, it is important to keep some of the same things in
mind that you would when buying books for an infant. A toddler also benefits from board books because
they allow the child to turn the pages on their own without struggling to separate the pages of a paper
book. It is also important to consider keeping the text shorter instead of having paragraphs. The toddler
will be more interested in looking at the picture and exploring the things on the page and are more likely
to ask questions about the pictures.

Preprimary

When looking for and buying books for your three to five year old, it is important to look for books that
your child can relate to and learn from. Part of looking for high quality books is what they are teaching
the child. Children learn more from books than I think people realize. If a child sees themselves in the
book they are more likely to go back to it and want to see it or read it again. There are also books that
teach the alphabet, counting, shapes, colors, etc. as well as books about the five senses, feelings, etc.
that your child can relate to and learn from.

Primary

When looking for and buying books for your kindergarten through second grader, it is important to look
for books that they can relate to as well as ones they can learn from. Some children in the primary
grades experience a lot of change and sometimes with certain change it may be hard to explain
something to your child so a book might be able to help you do that. Books help a child to be able to ask
the right questions and go to their parent about certain issues. Books about relationships (divorced
parents, bullies, etc.), cultures, and even things like tackling the first day of school can be a great thing to
share with your child as a way to talk about them. There are also great books that can help strengthen
counting, number recognition, etc.
