In the story, George Orwell was in a situation that he has to see capital punishment in front

of him. So he wants the world or everyone to know how crucial capital punishment is. Capital
punishment is a kind of punishment that legally has the rights to kill someone for there crime. In
other countries, capital punishment is completely legal or acceptable but in Burma. In other
countries, if someone does a big crime or something that they have to pay for their crime, they will
let the court decide and try not to torture. In Burma, they imprison someone even if that person did
something wrong a little and they treated prisoners like animals. Therefore, George Orwell uses
figurative language to persuade people to believe in his opposition to capital punishment.

In the story, George Orwell has mentioned the dog. The dog is the conscious of
policeman that takes charge of the prisoner. The first figurative language is used at the beginning.
The story says, A dreadful thing had happened-a dog, come goodness knows whence, had
appeared in the yard. It came bounding among us with a loud volley of barks, and leapt round us
wagging its whole body. This example has mentioned many figurative languages. Such as, A
loud volley of barks and leapt round us wagging its whole body. This example means that
something bad has happened and the dog means the conscious challenge him. And the other
parts of the sentence explain briefly about the dog feels and how the dog acts in this situation.

The next figurative language that George Orwell mention in the story Condemned cells
and fronted with double bars like small animal cages. In this sentence, the figurative language is
Condemned cells and small animal cages. It means that people in prison were treated like animals
in small cages and didnt have anything to eat at all. It made other people who were looking at the
prisoner wanted to feel sad for them. This sentence was a mixture of Irony and figurative language.

Another figurative language is in the beginning of the story, George Orwell mentions One
prisoner had been brought out. He was a puny wisp of a man with a shaven head and liquid eyes.
He had a thick sprouting mustache that was too big for his body. It means there was a man being
brought out and he was skinny with shaven head. In this sentence, it can be seen that the prisoner
is being tortured and didnt get much to eat. This sentence was also a mixture of Irony and
figurative language.

In a nutshell, George Orwell sees that capital punishment is too harsh in Burma. In Burma,
they treated prisoners like animals and torture them. The prisoners were very puny compared to
the warders. Not only that but the warders have rifles and fixed bayonets beside the warders while
the prisoners are being handcuffed. And the prisoner also has his head shaved with his eyes blurry
vision. So George Orwell uses figurative language to persuade people to believe in his opposition
to capital punishment.
