Terminology Used For Common Farm Animals
I.Introduction
Animal Production the technology applied to the
keeping of animal for profit include
feeding,breeding,housing,and marketing.Of great
importance is the making of the financial arrangements
necessary to the successfuk carrying out eah enterprise
in the light of the market conditions for the sale of the
end products.Animal Production is important because it
gives individual food,milk,and clothing. People in the
nation depend on animal production for many of their
needs. Knowing the different terminologies used in
animal production will help us understand more about
the process and for us to carry out different procedures
in a right manner.It will also help us understand the
nature and procedures in a right manner. It will also
help us understand the nature and procedures of the
different principles that governs with it.
II.Objectives
1.To know the terminologies of common farm animals
for grouping,breeding,management and recording
purposes.
2.To determine production expenses in the different
growth stages.
3.For classification and analysis.
III.Questions to Answer
1.Give the meaning of the following term in animal
production.
Animal husbandry-Feeding,Breeding,Management and
Marketing of Animals,Animal Products,Animal By-
Products for the Purpose of Obtaining profit from the
enterprise.
Animal Husbandman-one who does or perform activities
in animal husbandry.
Artificial Insemination-Introduction of sperm into the
reproductive tract of the female by mechanical means
rather than by natural mating.
Breeding-the action or process of bearing or generating
Breeding Program-is the planned breeding of a group of
animals or plants usually involving atleast several
individuals and extending over several generations.
Bull Wave-from technical analysis that finance traders
use to analyse financial market cycles and forecast
market trends by identifying extremes in invertor
psychology, highs and lows in price, and other collective
factors.
Burdizzo-castration device which employs a large clamp
designed to break the blood vessels
Casting Down-is a surgical operation, trimming of feet,
and better control at difficult calving.
Castration-the removal of the sex organs of the male.
Chute-an indined through or passage down which
something can glide or flow.
Concentrate-high in digestibility low in fiber content.
Crude Protien-the total protein in a food.
Dam-Female Parent,the mother of animal.
De-Horning-to remove horns from an animal.
Diseaseany deviation from a normal state of health that
temporarily impairsvital functions of animals.
Draft Animals-an animal,e.g,a horse,mule,or,ox,used to
pull heavy clouds.
Fancier-raise of animals for pleasure or w/o regard to
cost.
Gestation Period- refers to the embryanic or fetal age
plus two weeks.
Postering-to give parental help or to help the growth and
develop of something.
Halter-a set of traps placed around a horse head.
Herd-a group of animals (especially cattle, horse, and
swine)collectively considered a unit.
Intra Muscular-within the substance of a muscle, e.g., an
injection into muscle.
Intra Nasal-within the nasal cavity, within the nose
Lariat-a long rope(as of hemp or leather)used with a
running noose to catch livestock or with or without the
noose to tether grazing animals:lasso
Litter Index-is the multiple off spring at one birth of
animals from the same mother usually from one set
parents.
Litter Size-animals frequently display grouping behavior
in herds,swarms,flocks,or colonies,and these multiple
births derive similar advantages
Live Stock-domestic farm animals kept for productive
purposes(meat,milk,work,and wool);include beef and
dairy cattle,sheep,swine,goats,and horses also called
stock.
Mortality-the condition of being mortal,the frequency or
number of deaths in relation to population.
Mummified-to preserve (a dead body by treating it with
oils and wrapping it in strips of cloth.
Night Coral- to preserve (a dead body by treating it with
oils and wrapping it in strips of cloth.
Non-Ruminant-an animal without a rumen,e.g.,a
chicken,pig or dog.
Parasites-an organism that lives at least for a time on or
in and at the expense of living animals.
Parturation-the act or process of giving birth to young,
Pasture-land with grass for grazing animals.
Rodeo-an event in which people compete at riding horses
and bulls,catching animals with ropes,etc.
Roughage-rough,bukly foods or fodder such as bran and
fresh green vegetable.
Ruminant-an animal that chews its cud.
Sire-Male Parent,the father of an animal.
Veterinarian-one who is licensed to practice veterinary
medicine.
Veterinary Syringe-a device made of a hollow tube and
needle that is used to force fluids out of the body.
Veterinary Medicines-is thebranch of medicine that deals
with the prevention,diagnosis and treatment of disease
disorder and injury in animals.

2.List Down The Term Used For The Following Common Farm
Animals From Day Old To Maturity.
-Cattle

Bull-is an in-tac male bovine.


Bull Calf-is a male calf.
Calf-is a young bovine. This term used from the time of
birth up until about 6 to 10 months of age when the
animals is weaned.
Cow-is a female bovine that has a calf.
Heifer-is a female bovine that has not had a calf.
Heifer Calf-is a female calf.

-Carabao

Carabull-adult male carabao


Cara heifer- adult female carabao.
Caracalf-is a young carabao either male or female.
-Horse

Colt-is a male hores under 3 years of age.


Filly-is a female horse under 3 years of age.
Foal-is young equine under 1 year of age.
Gelding-is a castrated male horse.
Mare-is a female horse after her 4th birthday.
Stallion-is a intact male horse.
-Goat

Buck-is a male goat over 1 year of age.


Bucking-is a young male goat less than a year old.
Doe-is a female goat over 1 year of age.
Doeling-is a young female goat less than a year old.
Flocks-is a group of goats.
Kid-is a baby goat either sex.
Wether-is a castrated male goat (or sheep)
-sheep

Ewe-is a female sheep at least 1 year of age.


Ewe Lamb-is a female sheep under 1 year of age.
Lamb-is a young sheep.
Lambkin-is a newly born lamb.
Ram-is an in-tac male sheep that is at least one
year of age.
Ram Lamb-is a male sheep that is under 1 year of
age.
Sheep-is a mature ovine at least one year of age
and may also refer to the ovine species.
Wether- is a castrated male sheep.
-chicken

Capon- are male chicken have been castrated and


they are harvest at 4-8 months old.
Chick- a newly hatched or very young chicken.
Cock- is a male chicken at least one year of age or
older.
Cockerel- is a male chicken less than one year old.
Cornish game hen- are a cross between a Cornish
and Plymouth rock chicken.
Hen- is a female chicken at leastone year of age.
Poussin or spring chicken- is a young chicken,3-4
weeks old.
Pullet- is a female chicken less than one year of
age.
Roasters- are chicken that are 6-12 months age.
Roosters- is a male chicken over one year of age.
Stewing Fowl- is a mature male or female chicken
over one year of age.
-swine

Barrow- is a castrated male swine.(before sexual


maturity)
Gilt- is a female swine that has not given birth
Drove- is a group of swine
Feeder-is a young pig.
Hog- is a mature swine with an adult weight
above 150 pounds.
Pig- is a young swine that is not sexually mature or
a mature swine with an adult weight under 150
pounds.
Piglet- a baby pig refers to a young pig.
Shoat- is a young hog that has been weaned (not
sexually mature)
Sow- is an adult female swine.
Stag- is a castrated male swine. (after sexual
maturity)
