Brief description: This is my Ruth Lilly Guest Speaker reflection from my visit to the Ecolab at the
Rationale: I used Standard #10 to show how as a teacher sought out an opportunity to collaborate
with other school professionals and community members to ensure learner growth and advance
the teaching profession. Through collaboration with the Ruth Lilly Education Center I learned new
information to enhance learners growth by informing them of some of the ways that they could
obtain knowledge about the Ecolab on the Marian University campus. I was able to scaffold the
previous information that I knew in regards to obtaining and maintaining a healthier lifestyle,
Introduction:
I am writing this guest speaker reflection about the field trip my classmates and I took to
the Ecolab at the Ruth Lilly Educational Center located on Marian university campus on
Thursday June 30, 2016. This is a summary of the information I received from both of the guest

I did not know that the Ruth Lilly Educational Center existed until I went on this field
trip. I found out that it used to be known as the field trip site for this area. The mission of this
center is provide inspiring Health Education through their innovative presentations that promote
and reinforce health lifestyle choices for children and adults. The center reaches learners through
I enjoyed the talk from Stephanie who I believe she described herself as a jack-of-all-
trades at the center. She said she is an ecologist. She says that the center has three types of field
trip presentations for schools and the public. The presentations can be done in either one, two or
four hour classes. The class can consist of the Ecolab, Nature walk and also inside of the Ecolab
stations.
The other speaker reminded us that we were still in class when she had us to think of the
ten healthiest and least healthy states and the top six Winnable battles. My team got Indiana
correct for being in the least healthy states. Indiana is #41 on the Healthy Ranking chart. The
Winnable Battles are Tobacco, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Obesity, and Food Safety, Healthcare
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I was surprised to find out all of the information that I obtained in regards
to all services that the Ruth Lilly Education Center provides for schools and the community. I
was a little shocked to find out that Healthcare Associated Infections were in the Winnable
battles that could be turned around within 1-4 years. I was amazed at the effects that Hookah
smoking could cause as much damage as it does and that it is 90,000 times more dangerous than
tobacco inhalation.
I learned a lot about health education and the environment of the surrounding property
located on the Marian University campus. This field trip was very informative and the activities
we did were fun and eye-opening, especially the one about the T-cell in the HIV virus.
