Course Description Elementary K-5

English:

The Common Core standards K-5 for English focuses on communication skills. They learn how to communicate ,
establish discussions about age appropriate, and they relate things to real life .Students learn phonics and blending
sounds to form words, then develop to sentences.

It builds on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. They read , retell stories, be able to describe events in real
life. They focus on sentence structure , punctuation, and the tense of the verbs, and noun classifications. Learners
will be exposed to writing both academic and creative styles and be expected to start focussing on
accuracy, creativity, academic styles, and techniques as well as using the language to express themselves
on a bi-lingual context. Their critical thinking, understanding about the world around them, problem
solving abilities will be strengthened through text analysis and reading. Students analytical skills will
extend to main idea/theme, understanding character and plot development, and evaluating the impact of
word choice.

MATH:
The Common Core Standards for Mathematics grades K-5, the focus is on understanding numbers, shapes and
counting. Then it develops into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and
decimals, with a balance of concepts, skills and problem solving. Arithmetic is viewed as an important set of skills and
also as a thinking subject that prepares students for algebra. The Standards for Mathematical Practice should be
embedded in classroom instruction, discussions, and activities. They describe the kind of mathematics teaching and
learning to be fostered in the classroom. using numbers including written numerals, to represent quantities and to
solve quantitative problems.

Science:

In the elementary grades students gain scientific knowledge by observing the natural and constructed world,
performing and evaluating investigations and communicating their findings. Students will learn to use materials and
tools safely and employ the basic principles of the engineering design process in order to find solutions to problems.
These process skills are integrated into the curriculum along with the content standards in physical science, earth
science, and life science

Art:

The purpose of each Art curriculum is to promote lifelong participation in the arts by developing skilled creators,
performers, critics, listeners, and observers of the arts. Students can use the arts as a means of: (1) self-expression and
communication, (2) development of critical thinking skills, (3) self-knowledge and understanding of the world around
them, and, (4) increasing awareness of the artistic heritage of other cultures, as well as their own culture. It increases
their imaginative thoughts which help to self express in drawing.

Physical Education:

Physical Education is based on supporting students in their development of essential health skills within the ten health
content areas: (1) Growth and Development; (2) Mental and Emotional Health; (3) Community and Environmental Health. It
also develops the recognition of value of physical activity for health. . They will demonstrate competence in fundamental
motor skills , gymnastics and basic movements like dancing.
