Read and Summarize a Story, and Create a Book Cover
Reading and Writing Skills
4th grade
After completing this lesson, students will be able to
summarize the first two chapters of the book Junie B
Jones Is Not a Crook and understand that the reading
process involves different steps and levels to fully know
and understand what is going on in the text. When students
work in groups and partners it allows them to work through
any bumps along the way together and completely know
what they are doing. After doing this lesson students were
able to gain experience summarizing and understanding a
book or chapters within a book in groups, partners, and
individually.
There Learning Objectives
1.Students will be able to summarize a story or chapters
from a book
2.Students will be able to use multimedia elements that
can be used for future assignments
3.Students will know that fully summarizing a text is a
process involving steps.
4.Students will recognize that social media elements can be
seen in the classroom for educational purposes and is
more than just Instagram.
5.Students will learn new words that stick out to them.
6.Students will distinguish good and bad creative skills.
7.Student will know how to critically think about a story.
as evidenced by the lesson procedures students will learn
each of the above objectives through scaffolding of the
teacher and peers.
-Show students a Prezi that will outline the lesson and the
end goal
-Illustrating what the students will be doing throughout the
lesson will let them think ahead and be able to see the two
different parts of the project.

During the presentation I will:
-Explain to students that the class will be reading the first two
chapters from the series Jonie B Jones in the Junie B Jones Is
Not a Crook book.
-Tell them that the chapters will first be read in small groups
and then in partners from within their groups.
-Explain to all of the class that by the end of the lesson each
partnership will summarize the chapters using Powtoon and
individually, have created a new book cover using Storybird
-At the end of the lesson and assignment students will share
their Powtoon chapters summary of Junie B Jones Is Not a
Crook and Storybird book cover to the Edmodo class page and
present their creations on the last day of the lesson.

**Broken down into 4 days
-Each multimedia tool used in class for direction will be
posted in the Google Drive class page for students to refer
back to when completing assignments

Day 1:
-Create and show class a Mind-Meister that will break down
the lesson goal in days and objectives while also showing the
homework assignments

-Give each students a copy of the first two chapters in Junie
B Jones Is Not a Crook and a pen and highlighter for marking.
-Ask students to read the chapters in their groups, highlighting
any words that stick out to them
-Share highlighted words as a class and use Wordcloud to
project the words on the front board for all the class to see

Day 2:
-Show students the Google Drive class page as a refresher
-Ask students to divide into partners and reread the chapters
with each other
-Tell students to summarize within their partnership what they
have read in the story so far
-Ask students to create a Powtoon in partners that
summarizes the chapters.
-Play a video that explains how to use Powtoon.

Day 3:
-Use thinglink to come up with pros and cons of the book
cover

-Ask students to make their own book cover for Junie B Jones
Is Not a Crook individually
-Tell students to upload an image of their book cover to
thinglink and create pins on the images like we did in class to
explain what they did and why
-Explain that both the Powtoon summary and thing book
covers need to be posted to the Google Drive class page.
Day 4:
-Present Powtoon and thinglink book covers to class in
partners
-Each student should explain why they made their book cover
look the way it does
Homework Assignment:
The students in the class must use a
technology tool that we learned about
or an approved tool to create a final
product (Technology Tool). The
assignment should involve one of the 4
C's from the Partnership of 21st
Century Learning - communication,
collaboration, creativity, or critical
thinking.

-Students will communicate and collaborate with one another
in partners what the summary of the two chapters should
include and together create a Powtoon that summarizes their
ideas of the two chapters in Junie B Jones Is Not a Crook.
-Individually students will need to creatively make a unique
book cover using their own ideas with thinglink and add pins
that identify interesting aspects they chose to use.
-One person from each class partnership will upload their
Powtoon summary to the Google Drive class page according
to file name
-Each individual student will upload a thinglink book cover to
the Google Drive class page according to file name.
