Noise Pollution (Persuasive Action Speech)

I. Introduction
A. Attention getter: Throughout recorded history, mankind has been plagued by a variety of
natural and manmade ills. In the 21xt century, we are experiencing the manmade plague of
environmental noise from which there is no escape. Louis Hagen, MD said, slowly,
insensibly, we seem to accept the affects of noise as a normalcy.

B. Credibility Statement: As a member of society, I think it is important for us all to know


about this needlessly increasing form of pollution.

C. Identification Statement: Noise pollution is an inevitable part of everyones daily life.

D. Significance Statement: National Institutes of Health reports that 25 million people in the
U.S. are at risk of noise related health problems.

E. Thesis Statement: Today I will convince you that noise pollution is an unnecessary problem
with many negative effects on people and the environment that can easily be prevented.

F. Preview: We will examine the problem of noise pollution, the various causes, and possible
solutions to combat this issue.

II. Noise is probably the most frequently forgotten of all environmental


pollutants, yet the affects are many.
A. U.S. EPA said in the paper, Effects of Noise on People, that noise pollution affects nearly
every aspect of life.

B. In our industrialized nation, noise is more severe and widespread than ever before.

C. According to Stephen Matheson and Mark Stansfeld from the University of London, there is
good evidence, largely from laboratory studies, that noise exposure impairs performance of
simple daily activities.

D. According to Eddie Chandler, a stress management specialist, Sound can literally make you
sick.

E. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition 2006 says, over a period of time, noise pollution
causes hearing loss.

F. Noise causes stress.

G. Body reacts to noise with increased adrenaline, changes in heart rate and a rise in blood
pressure, which may result in heart disease.
H. Noise affects the quantity and quality of sleep, which according to the EPA affects 65 million
Americans.

I. U. S. Environmental Protection Agency established 70 dB as a safe average for a 24-hour day.

III. There are four sources of noise pollution.


A. According to the Environmental Protection of the UK, neighborhood noise is noise that is
confined to a small area.

B. Domestic noise affects the smallest number of people, but is the most complained about

C. Occupational noise is any noise a work.

D. Environmental noise, of which the major source is transportation.

E. Transportation vehicles are the worst offenders of noise pollution.

Transition: In order to reduce noise pollution, everyone needs to be a part of the solution.

IV. Solutions for noise pollution


A. Quiet begins with you.

1. Keep stereos, radios, and televisions turned down.

2. Purchase the least noisy appliance, such as vacuum cleaners.

3. Dont honk your horns, except in an emergency.

4. Create a demand for quieter appliances

5. Tell your friends and family about the hazards of noise

B. Learn to protect yourself from noise pollution

1. Always wear hearing protection when you must be in a noisy environment, such as foam
earplugs or ear muffs.

2. Take breaks when working in noisy areas.

3. Turn down the volume whenever possible, especially items with headphones.

4. Have regular hearing tests for any loss of hearing

5. Sound-proof your home.


V. Conclusion
