Objective 4.2 The student will investigate and understand characteristics and
interactions of moving objects. Key concepts include
d) moving objects have kinetic energy.
Activity The teacher will explain that energy may exist in two states: kinetic or potential.
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion while potential energy is stored energy.
She will illustrate the concept of the two states of energy by describing the
potential and kinetic energy involved in her favorite amusement park ride, the
rollercoaster, via an interactive rollercoaster ride.

This interactive roller coaster ride illustrates the relationship between potential
and kinetic energy. As the coaster cars go up and down the hills and around the
loop of the track, a pie chart shows how the relative transformation back and
forth between gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy. (PBS & WGBH
Educational Foundation, 2017)
An experiment will then be conducted in which the students will use different
materials to illustrate kinetic and potential energy. The students will be put into
groups and given the following materials:
Balloon
Rubber band
Wool cloth
Spring
Students will be asked to:
1. Discuss possible ways to give each one potential energy.
2. Try to give each item potential energy and allow it to transfer to kinetic
energy.
3. List the ways each item was given potential energy
4. Describe their observations of both potential and kinetic energy, using
phrases like, gaining kinetic, or losing kinetic.
During the activity, the teacher will circulate and ask questions. At the end of the
activity, the students will be asked to create an online presentation using
