Safety Precautions
Always follow these safety precautions to avoid injury and damage to the enclosure.
Know the locations of the equipment power switches and the room's emergency power-
off switch, disconnection switch, or electrical outlet.
Do not work alone when working with high voltage components.
Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from
electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specifically designed as
electrical insulators.
Dell Compellent 7
Chapter 2 Replacing SC200/220 Components
The power supply power cord must include a grounding prong and must be plugged into
grounded electrical outlets.
Warning: To avoid injury, do not attempt to the lift the enclosure by yourself. Always
get assistance when lifting the enclosure.
Keep the area around the chassis clean and free of clutter.
Place the chassis cover and any system components that have been removed away
from the enclosure or on a table so that they are not in the way of foot traffic.
While working on the enclosure, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties and
unbuttoned shirt sleeves, which can come into contact with electrical circuits or be
pulled into a cooling fan.
Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body because they are excellent metal
conductors that can create short circuits and harm you if they come into contact with
printed circuit boards or areas where power is present.
Caution: To ensure proper enclosure cooling, hard drive blanks must be installed in
any hard drive bay that is not occupied.
After you are done accessing the inside of the enclosure, close the cover and secure
the enclosure to the rack with the retention screws after ensuring that all connections
have been made.
Pre-Replacement Procedures
Before replacing a FRU in the SC200 and SC220 enclosures, perform a Phone Home and
contact Dell Technical Support Services. In addition, if the FRU is not hot-swappable, the
controller(s) and enclosure(s) must be shut down.
Phone Home
Perform a Phone Home in the Storage Center System Manager to send the current system
information to Dell Technical Support Services. The System Manager displays the Phone
Home status and indicates when the process is completed successfully.
1 From the Storage Management menu, select System Phone Home
Phone Home. The System Manager displays previous Phone Home events.
2 Click Phone Home Now. The Phone Home wizard appears.
3 Click OK. The Phone Home wizard displays the status of each item that is being sent.
Items that are being sent will have a status of In Progress. Once completed, this status
will change to Success if the Phone Home has completed successfully, or Failure if the
Phone Home could not be completed.
4 When all items have been sent successfully, click Close.

5 Hook the right end of the replacement bezel onto the enclosure.
6 Insert the left end of the bezel into the securing slot until the release latch snaps into
place.
7 Secure the bezel with the keylock.
Note: When a power supply/cooling fan module fails, the fan speed in the remaining
module increases significantly to provide adequate cooling. The fan speed
decreases gradually when a new power supply/cooling fan module is installed.

5 Slide the replacement power supply/cooling fan module into the chassis until it is fully
seated and the release tab clicks into place.
6 Connect the power cable to the power supply/cooling fan module and make sure the
cable is plugged into a power outlet.
7 Secure the power cable using the hook-and-loop strap.
Note: Allow several seconds for the enclosure to recognize the power supply/
cooling fan module and determine its status. When functioning properly, the
power supply/cooling fan modules AC power LED turns green and the power
supply/cooling fan LED is off. In addition, the power supply status indicator turns
green in the Storage Center System Manager.
9 In the Storage Center System Manager, make sure that the replacement power supply
is recognized and shown as up and running.

release handle.
Note: Handle the hard drive by the plastic part of the hard drive carrier or the
handle.
6 Insert the hard drive carrier into the hard drive bay until the carrier contacts the
backplane.
Caution: Do not remove the hard drive blanks that are installed in hard drive
bays that are not occupied. They are needed to ensure proper enclosure cooling.
7 Close the hard drive carrier handle to lock the hard drive in place.
Note: Allow several seconds for the enclosure to recognize the hard drive and
determine its status. When functioning properly, the hard drives status LED turns
green. In addition, the hard drive indicator turns green in the Storage Center
System Manager.
