Formal Observation Reflection

Name:Katie Miller Date: 11-28-2017

1. To what extent were learning outcomes appropriate and achievable to your

students?
My students were very responsive to my lesson, leading me to believe that my learning
outcomes were appropriate and achievable for my students
2. How effective were your instructional strategies? What changes would you
make in your instructional approaches if you taught this lesson again? Why?
If I were to teach this lesson again, I would have made sure to bring more bucket filler
slips. The students were so excited to be writing kind things about their peers, and
never wanted to stop.
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of your oral and written communication with
students.
I felt as though I communicated with the students very well. I asked them questions
throughout the book and created a discussion after. During both, the students were
very responsive and had endless ideas of how we can show kindness.
4. Evaluate the level of student engagement in your lesson.
The students stayed engaged and focused throughout the entire lesson. They were
attentive throughout our book and discussion, and once we moved on to the activity
they followed directions with no problems. Thankfully, I had the help of Kelsey Brice as
well to keep things organized and together we had no problems.
5. How effectively did you use instructional materials, resources, and/or
technology?
I pre-made all materials necessary for the lesson before implementing it, allowing for no
problems during the lesson. I only used paper and a book for my materials.

6. To what extent were your assessment strategies effective? What changes

would you make in your assessment approach if you taught this lesson
again? Why?
If taught this lesson again, and had more time, I would have like to assess the students
learning by creating a classroom list of ways to be bucket fillers. This would have
allowed for the students to feel like they came up with their own ideas while still being
able to see what they have taken away from this lesson.
7. To what extent was your feedback to students accurate, substantive,
constructive, specific, and/or timely?
Any feedback that was given to students, was given directly after noticing their work.

8. To what extent did the classroom management and environment contribute

to student learning?
The only time that I had to make a point to redirect the students, was during the book
because it was the end of the day and they were getting fidgety. Thankfully, as I said
earlier, I had Ms. Kelsey with me that helped to redirect any student that wasnt doing
their job. Overall, there werent many issues with classroom management.

9. Did you make modifications to your lesson plan during the lesson? If so,
what were they and what motivated these changes?
During the lesson, I decided to instruct the children to show me the bucket fillers that
they wrote before pasting them. This was to ensure they were writing appropriate
notes.
10. Was your Teaching Behavior Focus goal met?
Yes, my teaching behavior focus goal was met- students remained engaged throughout
the lesson while applying their personal experiences to the content.
