Is Technology Bad for Our Society?

Phones, computers, and game systems have been a-part of human society for years. Over

the years It has expanded. We can now use things like phones and computers to make

international calls, or look up the answer to any questions we have, and have 3-D 360-degree

virtual reality video games. Some think that humanity relies too much on technology, and that it

takes away from the natural interaction and social ability of people, and that it makes us ignorant

to functions we used to do before technology. Others believe technology improves efficiency for

business, as well as creates more job opportunities.

The first thing we will discuss are the cons of technology. The first one is that it creates a

social divide. It creates a social divide because of how expensive it is, and because its so

expensive, it creates a divide between the ones who can afford it, and the ones who cannot. (7

biggest pros and cons of technology par. 6) The second one is that it created a generation of

laziness. It created laziness because it took away the learning process of things you dont know,

such as actually going to school or looking through dictionaries to find out answers to your

problems or questions. It also took away from people doing things with hard work, so they could

know how to do it in future situations throughout life, as well as socializing and interacting.

Lastly, it becomes obsolete. It becomes obsolete because, once a new product is made, the

companies are already working on the next version of that product, and millions of updates to
Yates2

improve quality and production. In doing so, warehouses become over stocked with useless

technology that is harmful to our environment, as well as a waste of money.

Next, we will discuss the positive impact of technology. Technology has mechanized

agriculture. Modern agricultural technology allows a small number of people to grow vast

quantities of food in a short period of time. It also helps farmers in dry areas to grow healthy

crops (Technology and Society Para 4.) Another pro of technology is the ability to research.

Researching is something that has been around for years since the beginning of time, but back

then, people had to travel far to learn knowledge from other people, or read a book. Now

technology allows you to be able to research, or look up the answer to any question you have at

once, with much more accuracy and speed. Reading books could take hours to do, while you

may skim, or find the answer in its most plain and simplified form on the internet, using things

such as Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. Lastly, technology has helped with distance education. In the

past, when needing to turn in homework to colleges/universities or even mail period, people had

sent it by mail. Now, if you have homework, or a letter to a friend that you need to send, all you

must do is send an Email. It also helps you keep in contact with other students and professors, as

well as other people because of things such as social media, which is an outlet to let your voice

and feeling out.

Lastly, we will speak about technology inventions such as wheels, compasses, and auto

mobiles that changed the world. Before the world of technology, people had to use hard labor,

and thinking to get things done. Some argued that it was better the old-fashioned way, while

others feel technology made those tasks easier to do, as well as traveling and communication.

One invention that changed the world is Wheels. Wheels are something that made it

easier to travel. The oldest form of technology is also said to be wheels, from Mesopotamia,
Yates3

around 3500 B.C. Because of advancement in the new and innovative design of wheels,

industrialization could take root (Engineering, Interesting para 3.)

Another piece of technology that had a huge impact on the world is a compass. A

compass was created for spiritual and navigational purposes. The Chinese created the first

compass around 1050 BC. The invention of the electromagnet in 1825 lead to the development

of the modern compass (Para 4) The invention of the compass helped to navigate the world, and

use our maps, while modern navigation is based on GPS.

The last invention that changed the world dramatically is the auto mobile. Although the

foundation to the modern car year was laid in 1886 by German inventor Karl Benz, Cars did not

become widely available until the early 20th century. Henry Ford innovated mass-production

techniques that became standard, with Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. However, he

certainly wasn't the only person to develop the horseless carriage. The history of the automobile

reflects a worldwide evolution. Dozens of spin-off industries blossomed creating thousands of

new jobs. Oil and steel became two well-established industries. Vehicle production and sales are

one of the major indicators of the economic status. Moreover, it influenced the technological

advances in petroleum refining, steel making, paint and plate-glass manufacturing, and other

industrial processes. (Engineering, Interesting para 5)

Now, with the knowledge you already possess, and the knowledge you gained today, you

should have different perspective on technology. With this knowledge, you should be able to

argue if technology is good for society, or is it bad for society. I personally am on the side that

technology is better for society, but dont let my opinion affect your judgment.
