ARTAS S famous arias arranged or ; voue & guitar > by John Gavall RICORDI FOREWORD This small collection contains some of the finest writing for voice to emerge from Italy, Germany, France, and England in the baroque period. The aria by Erlebach, while less well-known than the others, is among the greatest of the group, The realisation of accompaniments to arias on guitar and on lute was very widespread in this era, and the interested musician will find copious data on contemporary musical publications of this type in “The Early Guitar” by James Tyler, Oxford University Press, 1980. The settings hers given are suited in compass to mezzo soprano or baritone. Flautists will tind sha these fine cantabile melodies provide very grateful material for their instrument, the combination of flute and guitar being one of the most attractive in chamber music. It is only necessary to modify very slightly the melody in the case of 4 notes to make the whole collection such instrumental performance. (See arias 4, 4, & 5).
