Grade: 6
STANDARDS

NGS-K-ESS3-3.Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air,
and/or other living things in the local environment.
NGS-MS-ESS3-3 Earth and Human Activity Apply scientific principles to design a method for
monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.

LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
This lesson will provide the students an opportunity to showcase their research skills and learn about the
Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Students will work in groups of four in order to create a poster describing
different aspects of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch such as what it is, how it formed, and whats being
done about it.
OBJECTIVES

Students will create a poster describing what the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is, how it is formed,
and what is being done about it.
Students will use their research skills in order to find factual and relevant information regarding
the topic.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
The students will create a poster describing several aspects of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and
present it to the teacher and answer the following.

What it is?
How it is formed?
What is being done about it?
How do you feel about what is happening/ what is being done about it?

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE
Students will have to know about plastic waste. More specifically where plastic comes from and its many
uses, how it is disposed of, and how it ends up in our oceans. The previous three days will all have some
connection regarding to how plastic ends up in our oceans. Students will have to use the knowledge from
the past three days in addition to further research on their own.
MATERIALS
Poster board
Pencils
Paper
Markers
Computers/Tablets/Laptops
Printer
Scissors

TEACHING PROCEDURES
1. Provide students a brief overview of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and show a map of where it is
located.
2. Explain that they will be creating a poster in groups of four about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
3. Either take students to the computer lab or give each student or group a laptop or tablet in order
to do research.
4. Give students poster board and other materials to make their poster.
5. Explain the four main questions you want students to answer in their presentation.
6. Give students about 45-60 minutes depending on how much time is available to complete the
project.
7. Groups will come up to teacher and present their research and poster.

WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION

Students will use both futures and values thinking when they answer the last question of the project.
Students will have to take into account how plastic waste that is being disposed of today can affect our
future. They will also use futures thinking when answering what they think about the different ways
people are attempting to clean the garbage patch. Values thinking will be important because the students
must take into account issues like the convenience of using plastic products against how it harms the
environment.
