Reflection 1

I felt that, due to the assignments we had in class, every learning goal was met. In
addition, to prepare for assignments or to gain the necessary knowledge in order to complete
them, group work and in-class discussion immensely helped. Thus, through assignments, I was
also able to grasp the course concepts well, therefore, helping me meet each learning goal.

Students will be able to read and use scholarly texts to support their writing goals:
o I felt that, in having to do in-text citations and Works Cited pages for each
essay, I had to take into account how to read credible scholarly texts and include
the citations correctly in my essays. During in-class discussions, we learned
which scholarly sources are appropriate and credible. In addition, while doing in-
class citation practices, I found that I was able to develop a professional
application of citations, in order to reinforce my writing. Also, I felt that I learned
how to properly do APA citations, through these practices. I felt that specifically,
the readings in the APA section of the UCF Writes book, regarding how to do
specific citations for difference sources, helped me learn how to correctly format
and use sources, all while using the APA format.

Students will be able to describe and analyze writing processes in order to flexibly adapt
them to support their goals:
o I felt that the Paper 2, Writing Process, essay helped me to best meet this goal.
For this assignment, we had to analyze our writing process for a certain type of
writing style that we engage in. Being that the purpose of this assignment was to
demonstrate our mastery and understanding of what a writing process consists of,
I felt that this assignment best helped me understand this concept. Especially,
since we had to apply this concept through a writing process we personally have
engaged with, it help me understand my own personal writing and what I needed
to do in order to improve it. In addition, I felt that the readings from the Writing
about Writing UCF book, especially those of Perl and her study, helped me to
understand the elements that a writing process consists of and made me realize
how dynamic writing processes can be, varying from person to person.

Students will learn how to adapt to different writing contexts they need to address.
o In order to master this goal of adapting to different writing contexts, I felt that the
Paper 4, Genre Analysis and Application, essay helped me the most. For the
assignment, we had to demonstrate how the writing studies concepts we learned
in our ENC1101 class could be applied and adapted to fit in other classes. I found
that, in doing this assignment, I was able to fully understand the dynamic nature
of writing studies concepts and how they could be adapted for use in other
subjects. Through in-class discussions, specifically, when the professor gave
examples of how a certain writing concept can be applied to a specific class, I felt
that this helped reinforce my understanding of the topic. Overall, I felt that the
Paper 4 writing assignment was what mostly impacted my understanding and
mastery of this goal.

Students will consider how social, rhetorical, and technological contexts shape writing
conceptions, processes, rules, and learning.
o I felt that the works that mostly contributed to my mastery of this goal were the
group presentations investigating Rhetorical Analysis, collaborative essays, the
Paper 3 Rhetorical Analysis essay, and the Paper 1 Autoethnography essay. All
these assignments investigated how social, rhetorical, and technological contexts
shape writing studies concepts. The presentations, collaborative essays, and Paper
3 assignment, all investigated Rhetorical Analysis and how it is present in a
certain community. In using this concept to analyze a community and understand
how it is shaped, especially through engaging in thorough research regarding the
topic, I felt that we were able to gain a full understanding regarding the social,
rhetorical, and technological aspects of writing studies topics. In addition, I felt
that with the Paper 1 assignment, in it being an Autoethnography, we were able to
personally see how writing concepts can be applied to a community through a
social context, especially since we had to analyze a Discourse community we are
or were personally involved with.

Reflection 2

Throughout my writing journey in ENC1101, from the rough draft of Task 1 to that of
Task 4, there were several changes that occurred to my writing style, mainly improving it.
Specifically, the changes occurred with in-text citations, citing sources, formatting, and
condensing information.
For one, I heavily improved with my citations and formatting the Works Cited page.
Before starting this class, I had previously utilized citations, for several assignments, while in the
International Baccalaureate program. However, these citations were done with MLA formatting,
not with APA. For the first paper, I feel that my citations were not as well done or were mostly
done using MLA format. Seeing my progress, throughout all the papers, I realized that I was able
to adapt to using the APA citation style formatting. In addition, through learning about the topic
more, I was able to use the citations more efficiently, to actually reinforce a statement. In regards
to the Works Cited page, I feel that, comparing it from the first task to the last one, I learned
how to properly cite different sources, according to their specific citation requirements.
In regards to formatting, I feel that I have improved in making the information more
presentable and clear for the reader. Beginning with Task 1, I relied more on transitions and
separation of paragraphs to indicate different sections or topics. However, as the papers
progressed, I found that including subtitles was a more efficient way of separating sections. I
realized that, due to the essays being mainly research based, I found that adding subtitles made
the information easier to read for the reader, and thus, they could understand it better. In
addition, compared to Task 1, I also learned how to properly format the heading and title for the
paper, as per the exigencies of the professor.
In the beginning, I often found myself writing too much or overdetailing my writing. As I
reflect back at my writing development throughout all the papers, I realized that I have worked
on simplifying my writing. Often times, during peer reviews, I found that people would always
comment on how my paragraphs would be too long, or how I had already made my point and
that it was not necessary to write as much, since they already understood what was being said.
With the help of peer reviewing, I felt that I made my writing more concise, but still detailed, as
we did Papers 2, 3, and 4. In addition, I also learned to have a higher consideration for the reader
or audience, and I began to recognize where to break the information, into paragraphs, to create a
better flow for the essays. In addition, I also found myself, in considering that the audience
included writing studies scholars and the professor, being more confident in the usage of writing
studies concepts within my writing. Thus, comparing from Task 1 to Task 4, I began to include
writing studies terminology and concepts more, to reinforce my writing, to demonstrate my
understanding of these concepts, and to build my ethos.
I feel that overall, from the first task to the final task, my writing significantly improved.
Mostly, with regards to citations, structuring or formatting, and with having more consideration
for the reader, to make the writing easier to read. Through these positive changes in my writing,
and the newfound knowledge of writing studies concepts, I feel that my writing has been
significantly impacted and has been developed to be used in a professional setting.
