Time
(min.) Process Components
10 *Anticipatory Set: TTW play the My Dog Addition song video from Youtube for the
students to enjoy and sing along to. TTW then review previously learned vocabulary
(addition, whole, part, sum, plus, and equal) from the PowerPoint. TTW introduce the term
addends. TTW will also review how to solve vertical addition problems, while showing
the students how dominoes can be used to create addition sentences.

*State the Objectives (grade-level terms): I can write and draw the addends of an
addition problem and then add them to find the sum. I can use the counting on strategy to
help solve addition problems. I can write and draw addition problems in many ways.

15 *Instructional Input or Procedure: The class will complete their calendar binders (start
off at the rug and end at their seats). TTW introduce the Domino Addition worksheets. The
worksheet requires the students to use a domino to draw the number of dots in the blank
domino rectangle. TSW also write the addends to complete a number sentence, as well
as solve the equation to find the sum. TTW tell the students to use a different domino for
each rectangle. Afterwards, TTW introduce how the students will make an addition
pennant banner. Each student will be given a pennant. TSW be instructed to create a
picture addition problem at the top. Underneath that TSW write a vertical addition
sentence. Lastly, TSW write a horizontal addition sentence underneath the vertical
sentence.
5 *Modeling: TTW show the students how to solve the first example (counting the dots to
get the sum). TTW then show the students how to complete each part of the next example
by showing them the domino, drawing the dots, writing the number sentence and finding
the sum.

TTW show the students how to complete each addition sentence. TTW also show the
students their options for the drawing portion.

1 *Check for Understanding: TTW point to each section on the worksheet and ask the
students what goes in each section (looking for correct terminology).

TTW reiterate the difference between the horizontal and vertical addition sentence (side to
side/up and down, equal sign vs. line).
2 *Guided Practice: The teacher will walk the class through the first section.
1. Grab a domino
2. Find the side with the most dots
3. Draw the number of dots in the first square
4. Write that number first for the addition sentence
5. Look at the other side of the domino and draw the number of dots in the second
square
6. Write that number in the second space
7. Add both of the addends and write the sum.

Revised August 2015
20 *Independent Practice: TSW complete the rest of the worksheet by themselves. TTW
walk around the room to make sure that the students understand the assignment. TSW
complete the pennant banners on their own.

Assessment: TTW review the pennant banners to check if the students were able to
write and create various addition problem sentences and solve them accurately.

1 *Closure: As an exit ticket TTW ask the students what addends are.

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

TTW help students who are struggling with adding by showing them a number line so they they can visually see how to
add. TTW also show them how they can add by counting on their fingers. TTW allow students show a high level of
understanding to write addition sentence problems with sums higher than 10.

Classroom Management Issues (optional): TTW remind students how important it is for students to
raise their hand to be called on so that others have a chance to answer questions. TTW also remind them
how important it is to listen so that they can be smarter and learn.

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part
of the lesson would you change? Why?

*Denotes Madeline Hunter lesson plan elements.
