Learning how to become reflexive and how to sustain
personal growth while instructing
Teaching means having a devotion to shape and build younger generations in society in hopes of helping students become functioning, well-diversified and respectable civilians. It is a profession that requires you to check your emotions at the door and enter a space were children trust what you say believe you because they recognize the authority you have and accept this to be correct. Older students understand your level of schooling gives you a hierarchy that should be respected. Students also bring in emotions from situations outside of school that are hopefully helped along by teachers being mentors. Teaching is guided by instructing students from a curriculum while ensuring students understand the ideas within these educational guidelines to allow them passage onto the next grade. I hope to be a teacher who inspires students to achieve their dreams while always making sure my classroom learning environment is one that facilitates inspiration and creativity. I plan to be disciplinary, as needed, with my students, so they will know not to talk over me or amongst each other when I am speaking. I also aspire to build relationships with students through coaching sports and with other non-athlete students through common interests or small talk, as I want to be a teacher that students feel they can come to and talk to about anything in general or things that are bothering them. These aspects are easier said than done but I am determined to help shape more well-rounded generations and to one day see results that demonstrate I played a role in making a better tomorrow. The characteristics I possess such as being sociable and kind will contribute to me being easy going and respectable when delivering lessons and dealing with students. I have a good sense of humor and am open minded, so I believe these qualities will help me instruct better in the classroom while also aiding me to attain positive student- teacher relationships. From ED 2500 I have learned that as a potential educator I can entice answers from students who do not understand the concept, while not giving away the answer. I learned this through my practicum when working with students in subjects such as Math and Science and I did not know I was good at doing this before being in a standard classroom setting. The challenges I will face is having correct grammar and word usage while also making sure my speaking skills are consistently clear. I also want to read current events more regularly, which will help enhance my word choice and grammar, while it will also help me get into a habit that I will want to follow as a Social Studies teacher who is able to incorporate what is happening currently outside the classroom to ideas and concepts learned in the classroom. I would like to further develop an understanding of how to incorporate inclusiveness in a standard classroom with a focus on special needs education. Five years from now I see myself teaching Social Studies at a junior high or high school level in a school in Calgary while also hopefully being involved with the schools soccer or volleyball teams. I also see myself instructing children on how to play music such as the bagpipes on evenings and believe what I learn from teaching music can aid in my teaching in the classroom.
