Purpose:- To ensure safe and smooth operation / maintenance of lathe machine at NQIL.

Scope:- This procedure applies to daily operation / maintenance of lathe machine to be performed
by lathe machine operator at NQIL.

Responsibilities:-
Lathe Machine Operator
Maintenance Supervisor
Manager Maintenance

Safety Operating Procedure:


Safety glasses must be worn at all times in Long and loose hair must be contained.

Rings and jewellery must not be worn. Gloves must not be worn when using this
machine.

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS


1. Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present.
2. Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF starter and E-Stop (if fitted).
3. Ensure all guards are in place.
4. Check that the job is clamped tight in the chuck.
5. Remove all tools from the bed and slides of the machine.
6. Ensure correct speed for machining process is selected.
7. Remove the chuck key before starting the lathe.
8. Do not try to lift chucks or face plates that are too heavy for you.
9. Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect machinery.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS


1. Never leave the lathe running unattended.
2. Before making adjustments or measurements switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill.
3. Do not attempt to slow/stop the chuck or revolving work by hand.
4. Avoid letting swarf build up on the tool or job. Stop the machine and remove it.
5. Always remove the chuck key from the chuck.
6. Do not store tools and parts on top of the machine.

HOUSEKEEPING
1. Switch off the machine and reset all guards to a fully closed position.
2. Leave the machine in a safe, clean and tidy state.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS
Flying objects - chuck key left in chuck.
Cutting tool injury when cleaning, filing or polishing.
Rotating machine parts entanglement.
Metal splinters/swarf.
Eye injuries.

Daily Maintenance:
Machine operator daily checks the following and performs routine service as follow:

Head Stock: Open the head stock and take the following actions:
a. Check the spur gear teeth, if it is damaged. a. Replace the gear.
b. Check the spur gear shaft, if the shaft alignment is out. b. Align the shaft on lath machine.
c. Check the shaft bearings, if any is jam or making noise. c. Replace the bearing.
d. Check the clutch lever cam surface, if it is damaged. d. Repair the cam.

e. Check the clutch cam shaft bush, if it is damaged. e. Replace the bush.
f. Check the speed variable pulley, if it is damaged. f. Replace the pulley.
g. Check the V-Belts, if any is cracked. g. Replace the V-Belt.
h. Check the thread lever shaft bush, if it is loose on the shaft. h. Replace the bush.

Bed:
2 a. Check the upper surface of bed, if it is damaged or rough. a. Repair the bed on plainer machine.

Carriage:
a. Check the hand wheel gear, if there is play in gear. a. Repair the gear.
b. Check the proper alignment of lead screw shaft. b. Align the shaft on lathe if require.
c. Check the alignment of feed screw shaft. c. Align the shaft on lathe if require.

d. Check the feed & lead screw shaft bushes, if any is loose. d. Replace the bush.
e. Check the feed & lead screw shat gear teeth, if it is e. Replace gear.

Cross Slide:

a. Check the alignment of cross slide screw shaft. a. Align the shaft on lathe, if require.

b. Check the internal thread of cross slide internal bush. b. Repair the bush thread if require.

Tail Stock:
a. Check the tail stock spindle thread, if it is damaged. a. Repair the spindle.
6 b. Check the tail stock spindle shaft thread, if there is play. b. Replace the shaft.
c. Check the tail stock locking mechanism. c. Adjust it, if require.

Electric Motor:
a. Check the motor bearing if it making noise. a. Replace the bearing.
b. Check the motor shaft alignment if it is out. b. Align the shaft on lathe machine.
7 c. Check the motor winding if it is warm out. c. Rewind the motor.
d. Check the motor fan if it is loose on the shaft d. Replace the fan bush.
e. Check the motor pulley if it is loose on the shaft: e. Replace the pulley.

After all repair and maintenance works, reassemble the machine and run all units and check their smooth working.
After confirmation of machine smooth working, utilize the machine for routing use.
