TYPES OF GEOTEXTILES

WOVEN NON-WOVEN
GEOTEXTILE GEOTEXTILE

HIV is spread through direct

contact with certain body fluids
from someone who has HIV:

Made by weaving polypropylene Made by a process called needle

fibers together punching
High load capacity Excellent filtration properties
High strength and stiffness Not as stiff but can be strengthened
Cheaper in cost More expensive in cost
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
OF WOVEN GEOTEXTILE
Created using traditional weaving
techniques.
The warp yarns are interlaced with
filling yarns.
Many different weave variations can
be used to achieve different
properties
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
OF NON- WOVEN GEOTEXTILE
Made by laying down fibres in a random manner and needle
punching them together to form a mat of fabric.
Needle punching entangles the fibres to mechanically hold the
mass together.

GEOTEXTILES IN
BUILDING
CONSTRUCTION
ADVANTAGES

2)WIDE VARIATY OF
1)ECONOMICAL FACING ELEMENT

High tensile durability and high Serve as a faade and protect

tensile strength which able the granular fill from outside
reduce the number of weathering. It is up to the
maintenance needed. users to define the type of
facing used.
ADVANTAGES

3)SEPARATION 4)FILTRATION
Serves to separate two Able to retain soil and other
dissimilar materials such as fine material ,while allowing
different soils, landfill material water to pass through .
and the native soil
DISADVANTAGES

1)DEGRADATION 2)CLOGGING 3)VANDALISM

Geotextiles are Caused by Can be easily

sensitive to UV accumulation of vandalised with
effects and may chemical and sharp material

RETAINING WALL
PROJECT: MOONLIGHT BAY RESORT VILLAS, BATU FERRINGHI, PENANG,
MALAYSIA

CLIENT: IVORY MEADOWS SDN BHD, PENANG, MALAYSIA

CONTRACTOR: IVORY ASSOCIATES SDN BHD, PENANG, MALAYSIA

- This project is a luxury property development on Penang Island

- It consists of 2 condominium blocks and 70 exclusive villas built into the surrounding
hill side with a view towards the sea, Andaman Sea.

- The retaining wall plays a role in the accessway into the development.
LOCATION: ANANTARA QASR AL SARAB DESERT RESORT, ABU DHABI,
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.

CLIENT: ABU DHABI TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENT

CORPORATION (TDIC), ABU DHABI, UAE.

CONSULTANT: HALCROW YOLLES INTERNATIONAL, ABU DHABI, UAE.

CONTRACTOR: AL JABER ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION (ALEC), ABU

DHABI, UAE.
- miragrid GX110/30 geogrid with a galvanised steel mesh was used as reinforcement for
height not exceeding 6m and for height between 6m and 12m, Miragrid GX80/30 was
used.
- Sand obtained from the desert was used as backfill
- Geocell was placed at the toe of wall to protect against erosion caused by wind which is
quite frequent in the desert.
- Retaining wall faces were shotcreted and rendered to give the resort a design that
blended well with its environment.
