 HISTORY OF UP SPECA NOTES

The University of the Philippines Speech

Communication Association (UP SPECA) was founded by
Kenneth Jose Bajar with the help of his batchmates during
AY 2000-2001. It was officially recognized by the College of
Arts and Letters and the University the year after. It has
been one of the most active student organizations ever
since.

The organizations vision is to be established as the

premier organization for speech communication majors in
the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Its mission is to
strengthen the organizations credibility as a speech
communication organization through academic and holistic
formation among its members and speech communication
majors, and through active participation in socio-civic
activities.

Dear future Specer,
Thank you for being strong and broad minded to consider our
much loved org to be your family in UP and beyond. Each step of the
way is a well crafted journey to ensure that you have a meaningful
experience to make you realize that this is a right decision. The
organization supports your endeavor which hopefully remains your
main motivation to continue until becoming a full fledged member. In
case of doubt, find the answer and contentment from friends, family,
and your heart. There are special reasons why this org keeps growing
and we hope you can be one of the reasons why and how it will
continue to keep breaking barriers. Keep on!

I had doubts when I shifted to speech communication. I didn't
know exactly what the field is, what to expect from the courses, who
to approach for mentoring and coaching, and how to make the most
out of my college life. I got lost looking for answers to my questions.
What I did find, though, is my passion for the arts and humanities. I
also realized that I enjoy directing and performing literary texts to
personal narratives; planning, implementing, and evaluating relevant
programs; managing financial and human resources; building and
sustaining relationships with old and new faces; establishing
partnerships with other people; and most importantly, leading teams.

I admit, it's a challenging journey. You'll probably also get lost

in the process, but at the end of the day, it will all be worth it. UP
SPECA did not only make my search for answers more meaningful; it
led me to me. In UP SPECA, I found my home. I hope you'll also do.
