Soap Production Proposal

WebQuest Description: In this Webquest students will explore the art of making soap utilizing their knowledge of organic chemistry
reactions.Specifically the saponification reaction will be analyzed in detail. They will be asked to apply chemical knowledge to present
a proposal for a maximum profit yielding soap to their employer. During their task they will provide a detailed explanation as to how
they may create the best quality soap with the least amount of waste. Along with determining the appropriate amount of chemicals to
use they will also be asked to shop for the supplies. Using various resources provided students will present cost breakdown to make
the soap. Understanding of synthesis, limiting reagent and cost of production will be required to complete the task.

Absolutely Clean is a small body care company based out of Los Angeles. As of this year the company has been trying to expand its
product lines and add new items to their inventory. One of the main projects that is being considered at the moment is adding soap to
their product offerings. However they do not have a procedure in place at the moment and also do not know the cost to produce each
bar of soap that they hope to sell. Currently they are seeking proposals that will give them guidance towards the launch of their new
project in the soap making business.

You are a lab technician at Absolutely Clean. As of last month the company has decided that they will be adding soap to their product
offerings. Your supervisor has approached you and given you  an assignment. The assignment is to create a proposal for the
launch of the new soap line. In your proposal you will need to included all of the following1. A detailed description of the
Saponification mechanism 2. A list of materials that will be needed for the soap line production3. Step by step procedure that
will be utilized to train other lab technicians.4. A cost breakdown for all the materials required5. The price of production for 150 gram
bar of soap assuming 100 % yield and excluding cost of operating machines or employee labor costThe proposal should be
addressed to the Senior Production Director

Step 1:What is Saponification?Use the provided resources to get acquainted with the Saponification reaction. Once you have
reviewed the resources communicate the mechanism in your proposal using chemical equations and an explanation as to what is
occurring in the process.Step 2: Making Soap ProcedureReview the procedures provided to making soap. Evaluate the instructions
presented and from them begin to create a procedure for your proposal. Create a step by step procedure that will be given to other
lab technicians at the company. Make sure that you included as many details as possible to reduce mistakes in the production of the
soap.Step 3: Buying Supplies Explore through the following resources to acquire the lowest price possible for the required materials
to produce the soap. When looking for supplies make sure to include price and quantity to ensure everything is being accounted for.
Attempt to buy in bulk to save. When creating a break down of prices ensure that all items have a clear price and place where they
will be purchased associated to them. This will done efficiently using an excel spreadsheets. In your proposal include the price
breakdown in a clearly labeled table.Step 4: Using the knowledge obtained from creating a procedure for soap making and the prices
of the soap supplies calculate the prize to produce a 150 gram bar of soap. For this calculation to do not include workforce cost,
operation of machines and assume 100 % yield from your reaction. This will require that you know the cost of all your materials and
you utilize your reaction for the synthesis of the soap. Include the cost of production in your proposal.

Your task will be graded using the following rubric. The rubric will assessed whether all four steps required were included in the
proposal. Grading take into account the rationale behind the contents of the proposal and determine its appropriateness for the task.
Make sure to include a mechanism with an explanation, step by step procedures, a list of materials with cost in a table and price
calculations for a 150 gram bar of soap. For more specific guidance refer to the rubric.

Before submitting your proposal ensure that all the following are included1. Mechanism for Sapnification Reaction with description of
what is occuring2. List of materials required to create the soap3. Step by Step procedure of soap making process4. Price breakdown
of all materials needed in a clearly labelled table5. Predicted price per 150 gram bar of soapOnce all of these items are accounted for
submit proposal to Senior Production Director Congratulations you have completed your proposal await response from Director
for further steps. You should now be able to explain the soap making process in great detail with respect to the Saponification
reaction. Along with this you should also be able to determine a cost effective synthesis of soap based on the current vendor
prices. Thank you for participating

This webquest allows students to apply concepts learned in Chemistry class to the industry. Students will be able to propose a
procedure to an employer in hope of establishing a new project based on their research. When using this webquest students should
have ample knowledge of Organic Chemistry reactions and be comfortable with Stoichiometry. This webquest is meant to be used
towards the end of the year as an activity that allows students to apply knowledge from the entire year.
