Language Arts Lesson Plan

Whole Group
Course: 5th Grade Language Arts
Date: Wednesday 11/29/17

SOL Objectives:
5.4 The student will expand vocabulary when reading
d) Identify an authors use of figurative language.
5.6 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts.
a) Use text organizers, such as type, headings, and graphics, to predict and categorize
information in both print and digital texts.

Class Objectives:
Students will review different examples of figurative language. Students will use the Wonder
text to interpret figurative language and how its being used. The students will continue to review
text features while completing their All About Me lapbook.

Materials Needed:
Whiteboard/dry erase marker
Nonfiction Text Features ABOUT ME packet
Wonder novel
Pencil
Colored pencils
Figurative Language Posters
Wonder Figurative Language Review
List of example sentences using figurative language

Anticipatory Set:
Teacher Speak Aloud- What does figurative language mean? Why do authors use it in their
writing? What are some examples of figurative language?

Allow students to answer the questions and record responses on the board.
Simile Analogy

Hyperbole
*Figurative Language uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the
literal interpretation. Authors use it to provide a mental image to the reader. Figurative
language also engages the reader making it more interesting.
Introduction:
Teacher Speak Aloud- Today, we are going to review figurative language and recognize it in
our novel that we have been reading Wonder. Before we begin looking for fig. language in our
novel, we are going to define each type of fig. language that we have learned about.

Procedures:
1. Anticipatory set
2. Powerpoint that defines the types of figurative language and their meanings.
a. Model example sentences of each figurative language.
b. During this time allow students to provide examples.
3. Hang the figurative language posters on the whiteboard for the students to reference to
for the next activity.
a. Teacher Modeling- Read the example sentences on each poster aloud to the
students.
4. Wonder figurative language sentences sheet
a. Do a question together as a class to ensure the students have a clear understanding
of the directions.
i. Read aloud #2: All of a sudden she let out the biggest, loudest, smelliest
fart in the history of farts. Ask students if they recognize which figurative
language is being used. After given the answer informally assess.
1. Ask students to give you a thumbs up if they agree, or a thumbs
down if they disagree.
b. Have students work independently for twenty minutes. During this time pull
students to the round table for one on one instruction.
c. Go over the the sentences together whole group.
i. Have students put their name on their paper and collect them.
5. Read Wonder aloud whole group
6. If time allows, have students continue working on their text features activity.
a. All About Me Booklet
7. Exit Ticket
a. Provide students with index cards. Have them create their own sentence using one
of the figurative languages we discussed. Instruct them to list which figurative
language they used below their sentence.

Pull small groups to the round table to assist in completing the independent figurative language
activity. Read aloud each each sentence and refer to the figurative language posters on the board.
Guide students into understanding which figurative language is being used. Meet with group 1
for ten minutes and then switch to group 2 for ten minutes. Students know that everyone gets
pulled at some point to work with the teacher.

Conclusion:
Teacher Speak Aloud: Today, we have reviewed examples of figurative language used in our
novel Wonder. Remember, authors use figurative language for the reader to develop word
pictures in their heads. This type of writing is more engaging for the reader.

Exit Ticket: Create your own sentence on the index card provided to you using figurative
language. You can use any figurative language that we talked about today. After you write your
sentence, list underneath the sentence which figurative language you used.
