AsapSCIENCE. YouTube, YouTube, 7 Sept. 2014, www.youtube.com/watch?v=HffWFd_6bJ0.

AsapSCIENCE is a YouTube channel that posts science videos with interesting and fun

graphics to help deliver their information. In this video, they are informing their viewers

of the five ways social media effects the brain. They call the addiction to social media

psychological rather than a substance addiction. The use of social media stimulates the

brains release of dopamine. I used this source to display on my website following points

made by Meshi.

Domnguez-Vergara, Julio A. and Jessenia Ybaez-Carranza. "Addiction to Social Networks and

Social Skills in Students from a Private Educational Institution." Journal of Educational

Psychology - Propsitos Y Representaciones, vol. 4, no. 2, 01 July 2016, pp. 207-230

Dominquez-Vergara and Ybanez-Carranza conducted a research to analyze the

relationship between the dependency on social network and social skills of private school

students. This article addresses that the addiction to social networks puts traditional

communication at risk as online socializing is improper. Unlike adults, adolescents can

adapt to new technology and have become the main users, which has led to their addiction.

They concluded that the higher the addiction to social networking, the less social skills the

students had. This is useful because it will allow me to demonstrate a particular target

audience is suffering by preferring socializing online rather than in person. Those who rely

on socializing online are more prone to have low self-esteem and shyness.

Ehmke, Rachel. How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers. Child Mind Institute,

childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/.
This articles purpose is to inform parents about how social media is negatively affecting

their teenagers. The reason teens are being more anxious and have low self-esteem is

because their excessive use of social media. Ehmke links the obsession of using social

media is causing teens to miss developing their social skills. She also talks about the risks

of teens potentially experiencing bullying or being stalk because of social media. I used

this source to support my point of social media putting a strain on the communication skills

of teens. They are moving towards the indirect communication social media provides,

which leads to the change in behavior and personality.

Green, Tom, et al. "Social Anxiety, Attributes of Online Communication and Self-Disclosure

across Private and Public Facebook Communication." Computers in Human Behavior, vol.

58, May 2016, pp. 206-213.

This main idea of this article is how social anxiety is related to the use of Facebook.

However, they specifically prefer for their usage to be private rather than public. The

private online communication is more appealing to people with social anxiety. I used this

source to expand on my point on how people are able to behave different during an online

conversation.

Meshi, Dar, et al. "The Emerging Neuroscience of Social Media." Trends in Cognitive Sciences,

vol. 19, no. 12, Dec. 2015, pp. 771-782.

This reviews purpose is to inform and outline what makes social media a desire in people

on a neurological level. The primary reasons for the use of social media was concluded to

being able to connect with other users and managing an impression on others. It is a way

for people to satisfy their social needs without having to engage in face-to-face
communication. I used this source to demonstrate how this addiction is psychological and

the specific needs social media usage satisfies.

Noor Al-Deen, Hana S. and John Allen Hendricks. Social Media. [Electronic Resource]: Usage

and Impact. Lanham: Lexington Books, c2012., 2012.

In this source, the author discusses the benefits of the usage of social media and taking

advantage of the technology by making it a tool. Unlike Dominquez-Vergara, he

acknowledges how the use of social media can be useful to those who are introverted and

shy. Overall, college students are more likely to be positively impacted based on their

ability to effectively adapt to social trends. This can be applied to the real world by

improving their communication and writing skills when they experience the positive

effects of social networking. Incorporating technology in our lives should improve

different aspects. Social networking is a newer form of communication.

Raju, Nevil Johnson, et al. "Online Social Networking: Usage in Adolescents." Journal of

Education and Practice, vol. 6, no. 22, 01 Jan. 2015, pp. 80-84.

In this article, the relationship between social networking and college students is analyzed

for the importance of technology in their life. Raju demonstrates that they have a high

dependency on social networking sites since they are the most users. He conducted a

questionnaire to track the student's usage of social media. This source would be very

important to my project to accurately support my topic. He addresses that traditional

communication is important and the skill is becoming lost. Adolescents socialize best

online, which will eventually have a negative on their lives.

Shearer, Elisa, and Jeffrey Gottfried. News Use Across Social Media Platforms 2017. Pew

Research Center's Journalism Project, 7 Sept. 2017,

www.journalism.org/2017/09/07/news-use-across-social-media-platforms-2017/.

This is an analysis of the increase in social media use. The platforms that experienced

significant increases of users are Twitter, YouTube, and Snapchat. However, Facebook is

the leading site as a news source followed by twitter. I used the graphs form this article to

demonstrate how we can transform how we use social networking. It can be a news outlet

and spread what is happening in the world to the many users using the platform. Most news

stories that are posted are retweeted and reposted, which brings more attention to news

and is a form of positive communication on social media.
