WW II

I.People/ Vocabulary

1. Adolf Hitler-(1889-1945) German politician and fuhrer. As Nazi


dictator of Germany, he planned to conquer the world, believing that
the German race was superior to others. During his time in power, he
ordered 12 million people killed.

2. Hidaki Tojo- prime minister of Japan when the attack on Pearl Harbor took
place

3.Benito Mussolini-(1883-1945) Italian dictator and Fascist prime minister of


Italy.

4. fascism- political ideas that stress strong government control, military


strength, and extreme nationalism.

5. Berlin Wall- was built because of the Cold War( USA Vs. Russia) in 1961. In
1999 was destroyed.

6. containment- the policy of preventing a country from gaining control of


another country. Focus on non military actions.

7. propaganda- the spreading of information, ideas, or rumors to help


or hurt a cause.

8. concentration camps- a kind of prison where prisoners were made to serve


as slave labor for the German war. Others were killed immediately.

9. Nazi Party- National Socialist, political party, formed by Hitler in 1920

10. inflation- a continuing increase in the price of goods and services.


II. Questions

1. Dates of the war- The war started in Sep 1, 1939 Sep 2, 1945

2. Cause and effects of the following events:

o Cold War- fought mostly with words and ideas rather than with
soldiers and weapons.

Causes: after WW 2 the Soviet Union and United States emerged


as the worlds most powerful nations. Leaders in US feared the Soviets
would try to spread communism to other nations and the Soviets feared the
the US would try to spread its culture and ideas about democracy to
countries under their control.

Effects: The US began a policy of containment and arms race


began . Both US and Soviet Union prepared for war . It led to destructive
conflicts like the Vietnam War and the Korean War; the Berlin Wall was built
and then it was demolished in 1999 and the two German nations were unified;
European countries were divided.

o World War 2-

Causes: Germany attacked Poland in 1939

Effects: The Allied Powers(Britain and France) declare war on


Germany. In 1940,Germany controls France, Polland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark
and the Netherlands. Britain remain undefeated. In 1941 Japan captures large
regions of China and several the Pacific Island . The Allied invasion of France cost
thousand of lives. Germany surrendered in May 7 1945.
o Pearl Harbor

Cause: Japan attacked the naval base in Hawaii in Dec 7, 1941

Effect: USA joined the war in both Pacific and in Europe. US helped the
Allies, and began to win important battles in North America and on the Italian
Pennsula.
The Japanese destroyed ships, airplanes and many people died. Franlikn D
Roosevelt was the president of the US and declared war in the Axis Power,
joining the team of the Allies.

3. Teams of War

Axis Powers - formed by Germany , Italy and Japan

Allied Powers - formed by Britain and France, then US

4. Holocaust

Causes: Hitler put a plan into action to get rid of all people he felt were inferior
like Jews, Gypsies, persons with disabilities and opponents of the Nazy party.

Effects: Nazi leaders developed the Final Solution to the Jewish problem. This
was the genocide, killing of an entire group of people. 6 million Jews and other 6
million non-Jews were killed.
5. Anne Frank story-Anne Franks family were Jew and to hide from
the Nazis her family fled from Germany to Amsterdam, a city in
Netherlands. Then they knew that Germans started sending Jews in
Amsterdam to concentration camps so the Franks hid in rooms above
their family business. Anne had a diary of her life in hiding. After 2
years and 1 month the Franks were discovered and sent to
concentration camps, where Anne, her sister Margarette, and her
mother Edith died, and his father Otto Frank survived because some
people rescued him.
