Subject Area: Art: Intro to design Grade Level: 9 th-12th

Teacher Evaluator: Emily Smith

1. What students are expected to do?

Students had to carve out an image on a linoleum block using relief techniques from
printmaking. Students had make at least 15 prints and implement them into their final projects
along with a specific color scheme and pattern. The students got to choose their image or
subject matter if they demonstrated that they knew how to use relief techniques by cutting out
areas in the block and understanding that carved out areas were white, and areas not carved
out would print the color they chose. The color scheme was also the students choice they had
the option to print in one color or role several colors together on one block as long as it followed
a specific color scheme such as primary or secondary colors. They were also allowed to use
different colors, surfaces and types of paper to print on. Finally, students needed to put their
projects together in a pattern of some sort. They had freedom to choose how to this, they could
cut up prints and use skills from the previous project and create a collage, they could cut them
up and put them together in any way they wanted, past prints on a large piece of paper (in any
color or size) or they could also draw or paint.

2. Which standards or curriculum expectations are being assessed?

1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding
color schemes and patterns through their final projects.
2. Envision and Critique to Reflect: Students will be able to discuss creative choices such as
content, color scheme and process and how they affect the viewing experience
3. Invent and Discover to Create: Students will use relief techniques to carve an image into a
linoleum block that can be printed showing negative and positive space and use creative
thinking to assemble prints into a color scheme or pattern.
4. Relate and Connect to Transfer: Complete a print using color schemes and meaningful visual
choices that reflect a culture

3. Describe what you would consider to be a proficient response on this assessment? Exactly what
would students need to do or say, write or perform for you to consider their work proficient?

This class is an MYP/ IB class the skills listed below are in the rubric that Mrs. Harris uses to assess
students based on MYP and IB grading standards. She does not use letter grades she uses the criteria,
Limited (1,2), Adequate (3,4), Substantial (5,6) and Excellent (7-8) she writes a number next to each skill
and then adds the score together for a total out of 24 points. In this grading scale proficient would fall
under Substantial or 15-18 out of 24.

1. Students turn in
1. Students can create clear and 1. Students create images assignments late or
intentional images using the using relief techniques that incomplete
relief process demonstrate thought and 2. Students show little
time effort or time in relief
2. Students understand color 2. Students use colors but do process and make
schemes and can apply them not have a intentional color minimal marks
in their final prints scheme in mind 3. Students show little to
3. Students understand pattern 3. Students experiment and know understanding of
and demonstrate creative make patterns without pattern or color schemes
thinking by, experimenting intent to follow a specific and make no attempt to
with materials and pattern. They try to make add them into their work
compositions creative choices and work 4. Students make no
As the projects have gone on with new ways of creating creative decisions and
students have become more make the project as
engaged and show an increased simple as possible
understanding and confidence in
their artmaking skills. For IB and MYP standards grades
handed in 3 days late get a 60%
and work turned in after three
days is 50%
Incomplete work receives a zero

need to do, how they need to instruction or help, provide
do it and what is expected of examples
them. Material is easily
learned and comes naturally

final prints
- Students have a total of 15 prints
- Students arrange their prints in a pattern
- Students use problem solving and creative thinking skills to experiment with materials,
colors and ideas

- Process, intent and content knowledge is refelected on in a meaningful way that
demonstrates understanding, time and thought

- students use some creative thinking by experimenting with ideas and materials
- students turn work in mostly on time and complete
- reflection is thoughtful and talks about intent and understanding
- time and thought are put into the project

LOW
