The Coasts of Britain Types and Processes Irregular, with many indentations Types: a. Estuary = a funnel-shaped river mouth which results from flooding oftidal areas. Some of them contain ports such as London, Liverpool and Glasgow. b. Firth fiord) = a drowned glaciated valley formed mostly in Scotland after the lce Age. (fjords are deep and narrow with high rocky parallel sides smoothed by ice action) c. Ria = a river valley drowned by the postglacial rise in sea-level. (rias are formed by rivers and with gentler landscapes) Remember rias have a river valley at their base whereas fjords dont! d. Peninsula = a tract of land, large or small, projecting into a body of water, having water on three sides. They are common in Cornwall, Devon and Wales, e. Straits and Channels = narrow stretches of water, which separate two bodies of land (e.9. the Strait of Dover, the English Channel). The seas around the coasts are quite shallow because Britain lies on the Continental Shelf. Processes: The British coastline is affected by erosion (resulting in cliffs) and building up of beaches due to tides.
