MECHANOCHEMICAL REMEDIATION OF PCB CONTAMINATED SOIL

ABSTRACT
This research had as main objective to study the feasibility of applying a technology
of remediation known as "Mechanochemical Destruction" (MCD), to remedy soils
contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), which are compounds of type
Organochlorine, which are of environmental importance because of their toxicity.
The methodology consisted in applying a process of cogrinding through a planetary
ball mill, performing the procedure in two ways: one using additives, and others
without using additives; This in order to compare the efficiency of the process with
and without the use of these products, taking into account that, in the first instance,
its use increases the economic costs of applying this technology and second, the
efficacy when applying additives (SiO2; CaO) had no greater relevance to the
efficiency of destruction, moreover, the PCDD/F present in the original soil was
destroyed with an efficiency, in some cases slightly higher, which is the index that
PCDF were not formed from PCB. After the grinding application, it was obtained as
a result that the destruction of PCBs in the contaminated soil was greater than 97%
and, therefore, it is within the provisional limit of COP content established in the
Basel Convention which is 50 mg/kg.
