Subject/Grade: 6th Grade English

Lesson Title: Colons and Semicolons

Objective(s): TSW (The student will):

Students will be able to apply the rules for colon and semicolon usage by constructing phrases
with the appropriate sign.

State Standards Covered:

Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and

spelling when writing.
a. Use a semicolon (and perhaps a conjunctive adverb) to link two or more closely related
independent clauses.
b. Use a colon to introduce a list or quotation.

Teaching Procedures:

Anticipatory Set:

Bell Ringer Activity: 2 Minute

Ask students to reflect on how we used commas and periods to conclude or combine independent
clauses. Encourage students to apply what they know about punctuations when assigning the
appropriate sign to the phrase(s).

The Colon familys Thanksgiving Dinner

1. I have a few days off this week for Thanksgiving and I know exactly how to spend them ___
gaining weight!
a. Colon (:)
b. Semicolon (;)
2. Mrs. Colon realized that it was getting late and the family was beginning to head out __ she knew
it was time to leave.
a. Colon (:)
b. Semicolon (;)
3. There are three important types of food to have at Thanksgiving dinner __ mashed potatoes,
stuffing, and turkey.
a. Colon (:)
b. Semicolon (;)
4. Aunt Colon lets everyone know the Macys Thanksgiving parade is on T.V by yelling __ Hurry
up, its on!
a. Colon (:)
b. Semicolon (;)
Ask - Pause - Call: Two groups will be asked to share who their group discussed.

Today we are going to learn how to properly utilize the colon and semicolon in our writing.

Aligned Information: 5 minutes

A Prezi presentation will be used to introduce Colons and Semicolons and will provide
examples for both. Students will be able to turn their bell-work worksheet over where they will
find the definitions for both punctuations and will have the opportunity to follow along with the
presentation. In order to encourage student engagement, students will be called on randomly to
repeat the rules.

Semicolon (;) SUPER-COMMA The most common way to use a semicolon is to

connect two independent clauses.

The two statements are separated by a period. If read aloud, it would go something like this:
*take a breath* - What we did was eliminate the pause between the two statements without using
words such as and, but, nor, or yet.

Colon (:) used to introduce a list of items, between independent clauses when the
second explains or illustrates the first, or to emphasize a phrase or single word at the end of a
sentence.

Check for Understanding: Think - Pair - Share - 30 Seconds

After presentation students will be asked to discuss the defined terms with their elbow
partner(s). The person with the longest shirt sleeve will have the first 15 seconds to redefine
semicolon while the other person listens; the second person will have the last 15 seconds to
redefine colon. A clap two times will indicate that the time to discuss is up. Before giving
students permission to discuss with their partners, we will check for understanding of the
procedures by asking a student to repeat the instructions and indicate whom will be speaking first
in their group depending on the length of their sleeves.

Ask: Please point to your elbow partner.

How long do you have to discuss with your partner?

Who will be going first?

*teachers will walk around the room listening for active participation and collaboration.

Model: Guided Practice - 2 Minutes

As a class, we will be going over four sentences and identifying which punctuation will be used
and why.

Directions: Index finger will be used to represent the semi colon - Peace sign will be used to
represent the colon. Raise finger(s) to answer the following questions:

1. I have finished eating my turkey __ now it is time for pumpkin pie.

2. There are three things I enjoy the most about Thanksgiving __ the food, the football
game, and my family.
3. We had too many fumbles __ we lost the football game.
4. Everyone in my family knows who will eat the most at Thanksgiving dinner __ me!

Ask: Please raise either your index finger or the peace sign to identify which punctuation will be
used to fill in the blanks.

Lesson Closure: 1 Minute

Once students have completed their assignments and have a clear understanding on how
and when to use colons and semicolons, they will be asked to write a sentence about their
thanksgiving plans using a colon or semicolon. Once the student is done with their closure, they
will be asked to quietly pass their paper to the person on their right and wait for me to pick the
sheets up.
