POS THOUGHT JOT

The following worksheet is designed for the student teacher to use the Program of
Studies (POS) developed by Fairfax County Public Schools to create lesson plans. Each
Standard should be addressed in each lesson. Shoot for at least 2 relevant
Benchmarks per Standard. An SBI is an acronym for Standards, Benchmarks, and
Indicators.

1st) Write the SBI. Type the standard as stated (largely) in the POS. 2 nd) In your own
words explain how you addressed each Standard specifically in creating your lesson.
Refer to Indicators in the POS for ways to demonstrate student understanding of
Benchmarks. Complete this worksheet and include it with your completed lesson
plan packet documents (At a Glance, FCPS Lesson Plan Form,
PowerPoint/Keynote/Prezi, Exemplar, and Script).

Format example:

K 1.A.1. The student will apply self-awareness and personal experience to explore
concepts of self.

The student will create a self-portrait that shows understanding of his/her


appearance, interests, or concerns.

STANDARD 1 - COMMUNICATE
The student will understand and apply the creative process to develop and
communicate relevant and original ideas.

2. 1.A The student will explore concepts related to the theme of community to express ideas
in artwork. (2.4).

The student will communicate ideas of the roles insects play in our community.

2. 1. B. 5. Collect feedback from others to refine artworks.

The students will share their work with others in their group, and discuss ways to improve.

STANDARD 2 - FORMS, METHODS & FUNDAMENTALS


The student will understand how artists make purposeful decisions to follow or
break tradition when selecting art forms, choosing methods of representation,
and applying art fundamentals in artworks.

2. 2. A. 1. Distinguish among and communicate meaning through functional, decorative, and
expressive art forms.

Students will learn how bugs have been depicted in art throughout history.

2. 2. Identify and use zigzag, dotted, wavy, and spiral lines to represent subject matter.

Students will stitch different line types in their stitchery.

STANDARD 3 - ART MEDIA TECHNIQUES & PROCESSES


The student will understand how artists experiment with materials, develop
excellence through practice, and apply art media techniques and processes to
create meaning in artworks.

2. 3. D. 1. Use stitchery techniques to include couching in a stitchery.

Students will be asked to use a variety of stitching techniques in their final product.

2. 3. A. The student will distinguish among and use drawing media,


techniques, and processes to produce well-crafted artworks.

Students will first sketch out their ideas, then draw them onto the burlap.

STANDARD 4 - RESPOND
The student will gain insight into art and artmaking by reflecting on and
responding to artworks through critical and aesthetic discussions.

Students will look at other students work, and decipher what they are trying to say.

2. 4. B. 4. Identify and describe qualities of craftsmanship in artworks.

Students will look at qualities of a well done stitchery, example are their loose threads?

STANDARD 5 - CONNECT
The student will understand the connections among art, artists, history, and culture.

2. 5. A. 2. Describe how self, family, and community can influence the work of an artist.

The work will reflect personally each childs view of their life within their community.

2. 5. B. 1. Incorporate knowledge from another discipline when creating artwork. (1.4)

Students will incorporate some of the knowledge they are learning in their math classes, for
example identifying and creating patterns, and lines of symmetry.
