Ethics in Writing

Aside from avoiding plagiarism at all cost, there are some generally acceptable standards
of conduct and moral judgment called ethics that you should observe when writing. You should
exercise sensitivity every time you assert your personal point of view or strong opinions, most
especially on societal or religious issues.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you write, especially if your topic is of a
sensitive issue.

Audience

Your audience is divers. Factors that make the reading audience diverse are the
following: gender, age, educational background, occupation, religious affiliation,
economic/ social status and cultural background especially of those coming from other
countries.

Take note of the rising popularity of gender issues in recent years. If the issue
before was on feminism, nowadays we have another marginalized group that has been
fighting for equal rights --- the LGBT group. When you write on matters that pertain to
them, remember to be kind and put aside your own biases and prejudices. Be fair and
respectful! Remember, Me and your Adviser (MIC) are part of it! Eme!

Another factor to consider when you think of your audience is their religious
affiliation. Avoid making hasty generalizations of people belonging to a religious
organization. Remember that a religion is just a name, but it still consists of unique
individuals. Kuware, you cannot say that all Christians are good and honest people.
There are many people professing to be Christians, and yet, they are not good and honest.
Eto pa, dont say Filipinos are indolent and poor because there are many true blooded
Filipinos are indolent and poor, but there are also some who are rich because they are
hardworking. Gets?

Information

Never twist nor distort your information just so that it will benefit your purpose,
Make your information rich in substance, accurate, and precise. In presenting the side of
an information or issue that you favor, do not forget to acknowledge the point of view of
the opposing side. Kuware ulet, say that you are against one politician. Dont mention
only the bad things about him. Acknowledge the positive things about him as well. If
your goal is discourage voters from voting him, then you should still acknowledge the
positive side before exposing the negative things about him.

Values

Remember that ethics is defined as the acceptable moral standards and judgment.
Be responsible in what you write. Be honest. Be fair. People will take your writeup
seriously and can make you pay for it if you are not careful.
