Resource #2:
MATERIALS/ EQUIPMENT/ SET UP
* Jothams Journey
* Slips of paper with their gifts and talents
* Script for Mary, Mother of God
PROCEDURE
Introduction (10 min.):
Lesson Opener: Read Jothams Journey (Week 2: Monday)
Attention Grabber: In a few minutes I will need more volunteers (like yesterday), we get to do some acting!
Advance Organizer/Agenda: We will finish up yesterdays activity and then learn about our Heavenly Mother
through acting!
Transition to Body: Explain why they do not have to find their own paper to start with, different from if we
would have done this activity yesterday.
Body (35 min.):
What is the teacher doing? What are the students doing?

Learning Activity #1: Talent toss!

(help students who were missing yesterday to make one, make one for myself, and ask if Mrs. _____ would like
to participate)
Instructions for activity:
Hand out papers (dont match to the students)
Crumple up your paper and toss it in the air (on my count)
Pick up a different paper and read it
Based on what you read, try to find the person your paper belongs to
Sit down when you have 1) given away the paper you hold, and 2) received your paper back

Formative & Summative Assessments: I will also be participating, watching for all students to be participating,

Specific Learner Considerations: I helped some students last class to make sure they could write something on
their page, I will help any students struggling to find the person their paper belongs to.

Transition to Activity #2: As we approach Christmas, there is a special person that had to use her gifts and
talents to follow Gods Will, can you guess who this is?

Learning Activity #2: Melodrama Mary, Mother of God

What is a melodrama?

I will choose students, ask them to remember their role but only come up to the front when I call them.
*move the two front desks to allow for more space*

I read the script, students act it out. (Im not sure if I will ask them to say the characters lines or not)

Specific Learner Considerations: I will choose students who will be confident enough to act silly in front of the
class, the remaining students will all be involved in smaller roles so everyone can be a part of it.

Transition to Activity 3: Applaud all our actors, ask all students to return to their seats.

Learning Activity #3: Discuss who Mary was and share the story of the Annunciation

Discuss elements of the melodrama that has been taken from tradition, distinguish from elements taken
from Scripture. (Josephs age, Marys age, Josephs previous marriage and children, how Joseph was
chosen for Mary, Mary living the first part of her life in the temple, etc.)
Share story of the Annunciation, ask what they know about the story and build from there.
And the word was made flesh discuss what this means
Ask if they know any other names for Mary, give some examples (Our Lady of Fatima/the
Rosary/Guadalupe [page 88 in your religion books], Queen of All Saints, Heavenly Mother, etc.)

Formative & Summative Assessments: Participation in discussion, quality and relativity of questions.

Transition to Closure/Next Lesson: Mary is a huge part of Advent, we will continue to talk about her next week.
Closure (5 min.): * Connect your closure with learning objectives*
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: If you are going to church this Sunday, listen for stories about Mary
from the priest and in the readings. We will begin our own classroom traditions on Monday!
Lesson Reflections (After you teach):
What went well:
Students all participated and enjoyed both the 1st and 2nd activities. It was a very active class,
good to get them out of their seats.
Students were engaged throughout and asked lots of questions that lead the conversation in the
third activity.
The melodrama really engaged their prior knowledge, discussion about what is from scripture
and what is from tradition went really well.
I picked all parts for the melodrama, then said any and all other students who want to be a part
of it can be Josephs children, since I needed multiple and it did not need to be a precise
number.

What can be improved upon:

Take more time to explain all directions. I forgot to explain what to do once they found and
gave away their papers in the first activity. I also forgot to ask them to speak loudly and actually
act out their part instead of just standing there.

Describe how the students met your lesson objectives:

Students acted out the story of Mary or were engaged in watching
All students filled out a sheet of their gifts and talents and were positive and encouraging with
each other during the activity.

What did you change as you taught this lesson:

Didnt get to address all the topics in the last activity, ran out of time.
I decided to get the students to speak the lines after me, they did well but didnt make a big

difference to the success of the activity. I might do without it in the future, depending on the
students I am working with (the quieter ones were uncomfortable with it)
