Teacher(s): Alexander Smith Subject: MLA Format

Standard(s): Common Core, Arizona Career and College Ready Standards, ISTE
Standards apply to this lesson
11-12.W.2
Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information
so that each new element builds on that which precedes it to create a
unified whole; include formatting, graphics, and multimedia when
useful for comprehension.
This standard is the foundation for the lesson plan as a whole. I
believe that students need to cultivate a deeper understanding
for their topics as well as the organizations of their work, and
MLA Format is the perfect guideline for laying out a topic and
exploring it more deeply. MLA is the formatting of the essay, so
this standard aligns perfectly with my lesson plan.
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex
ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the
effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
MLA Format offers students an effective way to organize the
content they are analyzing within a selection, which this
standard is essentially saying.
11-12.RL.1
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what
the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text,
including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
Taking specific points from the text students are analyzing will
prove to be beneficial for them, as their Works Cited page
offers a clear and concise means of organizing their sources
throughout their book(s) or website(s) they were looking at.

Objectives (Explicit): Use Blooms verbiage and formula

Students should understand the parts of MLA format by getting parts
correct on paper (header, double-spacing, works cited)

Do Now:
Log into the computers in the computer lab and sit at the desktop screen. Explain the
importance of MLA, and the organization of the header, as well as the importance of
double-spacing lines. Leave out Works Cited for another day, as this topic will need to be
covered at a later date.

I Do:
Turn on the projector, and have Word open. Show how to create a header, and how to
change the format.

We Do:
Students log into computers and open Word, and practice making a header (Name,
Teacher Name, Class, Date), and change the format to Double Spaced.

You Do:
Students will then type two to three sentences about what their plans are this weekend.
This will illustrate that their format was changed to double spaced correctly.
