Bulk Specific Gra 1. SCoPE: LL This method of test covers the etermination of bulk specific praviny Of specimens of compacted bitninous mixtures as defined in M132, Terms Relating to Density and Specitie Gravity of Solids. Liguids, and Gases, 41.2. This method shouldbe used with samples that contain open or intezcon- necting voids andor absorb more than 2 pereent of water by volume, a8 deter rned by T 166 1.3. The bulk specific gravity of the ‘compacted bituminons mixtures may be sed in ealeulatiag the unit weight of the mixture 2. TEST SPECIMENS A Test specimens may be either Inboraten-mold.2 bituminous mistures ‘or from binumuncas pavements. The mix ‘ures may be suiace of wearing covise, binder oF leveling course, o7 hotnin base 2 Size of Specimens—t is recom: ‘mended, (1) tat ie diameter of eylindri- cally molded or eared apecimens, o the length of the sides of sawed specimens, bet least equal to four times the mai ‘mum size of the aggregate; and (2) that the thickness of speciment be at least fone and one-half times the maximum site of the aggregate. 2.3 Pavement specimens shall be taken from pavements with core dil, iamond or earbarundim say or by other suitable means 24 Care shall be taken to avoid dis tortion, bending. or eracking of apeci- ‘mens duning and after the removal from pavement or meld. Specimens shall be stored in a safe, cool place 25 Specimens shall be fiee fiom foreign materials such as seal coat, tack ns Standard Method of Test for Paraffin-Coated Specimens AASHTO DESIGNATION: T 275-91 ‘oat, foundation materia, soil, paper. oF foi 26 IF desea specimens imay be Separated from other pavement layers by Sawing oF other suitshle means METHOD 4 3. APPARATUS 31 Balance—Conforing tothe te quirements of M231, for the class of balance required forthe principle sample Weight of the sample being tested. "The balance shall be equipped with suitable suspension apparatus and holder to per ‘mit weighing the specimen while sus- pended from the eenter of scale pan of balance 32. Suspension Apparan—Wire suspending the container shall be of the smallest practical size to minimize any possible effecs of a variable immersed length. The suspension apparatus shal be constructed 10 enable the Containe 49 be immersed 10 2 depth sufficient to cover it ané the west ample during weighing 32 Hter Both—For immersing the specimen in water while suspended un der the balance, equipped with an over- Flow outlet for maittsining 2 constant water level 4.
