Based on our experiment, we found that in general, the value of illuminance decrease exponentially
as distance between lux meter and the lamp increase. Based on the equation given, illuminance is
inversely proportional to the distance raised to the power of two. The graph illuminance against
horizontal distance also shows that illuminance decreases exponentially as distance increases,
however as the scale of the graph is quite large its actual shape is not well defined.

By referring to the table, it is proven that as you move farther away from the light source the
intensity of light is reduced because the brightness of light as a function of the distance from the
light source follows an inverse square relationship.

For the second task, we are to determine whether the design of lamps in the assigned room is in
accordance with JKR standards or not, thus we are to propose a design in order to improve the
lighting in the aforementioned room.

The room we are assigned to is the Computer Laboratory 1 located on level 5 of the building. The
area of this particular room is 81.893m2. The data required for this experiment is given as shown;

Ceiling reflector factor = 50%

Wall reflection factor = 10%
Room index = 2.5

Hence, we used these data to obtain the coefficient of cetilization, Cu = 0.41 from Table 8.1
(Appendix1).

After calculation the existing illumination of the room by 24 lamps is 265.547 lx. However,
according to the JKR standard the required value of lighting is E = 300 lx. Therefore, upon further
calculation the total number of lamps required within the computer laboratory is a total of 28 lamps
which makes the room short of 4 lamps in order to be in accordance with the JKR standard.
