Norse Ritual of the Hexagram

The hexagram symbol is composed of two interlaced triangles and typically, the downward
pointing triangle is understood to be that of Water, the upward pointing one that of Fire. There
are two ways we can connect to this symbolism in our tadition; one is the geometrical aspect of
the triangles. The first triangle pointing downward representing our descent into the underworld,
embodied by the element of Water. The element of Water corresponds to the West (which is one
reason we face west in our ritual), astral travel (and of course, this fits quite nicely with this
being our pathworking connecting to the astral plane), Feminine receptive energy (relating the
Goddess Hel recieving us into her hall), and of course, the underworld or land of the dead (our
destination). Water is also connected to the runes Uruz, Gebo, Hagalaz, Isa, Perth, Ehwas, Laguz
and Dagaz. Three of these we find are on our hexagram paths (Uruz, Hagalaz and Ehwas), of
course Ehwas is the only rune on the downward triangle.
Within Ehwas we find many correspondences to this downward descent. Ehwas represents the
horse, which is a sacred animal to the Norse. It is seen as a means of both material and spiritual
advancement. Ehwas also represents partnership, such as that between the horse and it's rider,
brother and sister (connected to both Frey and Freyja, the sacred twins), two halves of the whole
(a refrence to Hel in this case being the partnership of life and death). Ehwas also implies
controlled change, progress and sometimes a journey (this being our shamanic journey to the
underworld).

Now the second triangle is therefore pointing upward and represents our return o life and the
physical plane. This triangle is embodied by the element of Fire. Within the element of Fire we
find energies relating to purification and transormation (of course this is the purpose of the
shamanic descent into the underworld. It is his journey of initiation, he travels to the underworld
o stand before his underworld deity to be estroyed and found worthy of resurrection and rebirth.
In this initiatory rite he is purified and transformed through a symbolic death and resurrection).
The element of Fire is also connected to the Pheonix, a symbol of life, death and rebirth.

The second way we can connect with the hexagram is through the Elements as they relate to
Norse mythology and the astral plane. The astral plane is the plane of creation (we discussed this
in part two), and in Norse mythology we find that creation happened when Muspelheim (Fire)
and Niflheim (Ice) collided in Ginnungagap (the void).
It is said that "Frost from Niflheim and flames from Muspelheim crept toward each other until
they met in Ginnungagap. Amid the hissing and sputtering, the fire melted the ice (changing Ice
to Water) and the drops formed themselves into Ymir, the first of the godlike giants."
Therefore, when we connect with the hexagram on an elemental level (Water on our descent and
Fire on our ascent), we find creation. Through this elemental mixture we achieve our return in
the next part of the creation mythos when "Odin, Vili, and Ve rise up to kill Ymir and use his
body to form Midgard." Thus finding ourselves back on the physical plane, transformed through
the journey of life, death and resurrection.
Now that we have established the symbolic nature of the hexagram in this stage of our
pathworking, let us explore the ritual itself to see how we can convert it into our tradition and the
energies we are working with.
The ritual begins with what is referred to as "Analysis of the Keyword", and begins with
instructions to Face East. (If using a wand or other implement, hold it upright in front of the
body.) and Say, I.N.R.I.
When I first began looking at this ritual, I made the mistake of taking this at face value. I, like
many pagans, saw the INRI as a refrence to Jesus and attempted to convert it to an acronym
relating to Odin's "sacrifice of myself, unto myself", but this destroyed the entire ritual structure.
So I had to back up, start over and look at INRI from a different perspective.
The initials I.N.R.I. which, interpreted according to a certain technology of initiation, reveal
formulae of attainment. I.N.R.I., in the Christian tradition, are the Latin initials of "Jesus of
Nazareth, King of the Jews". This is the inscription said to have been placed above Jesus by
Pontius Pilate during the crucifixion. These initials have been assigned a variety of esoteric
readings within the Western mysteries. The Rosicrucians, for instance, used them as the initials
of one of their Hermetic secrets: Igne Natura Rerun vatur Integras meaning that by fire, nature is
perfectly renewed (a direct connection to our connection with the hexagram through the
elemental correspondences).
The keyword I.N.R.I. is analyzed by first substituting Hebrew letters for the Latin. I.N.R.I. =
Yod, Nun, Resh, Yod (). Each of these letters has certain astrological correspondences within
the Golden Dawn system (where the ritual origionated). The initials now give: Virgo Scorpio
Sol (The Sun).
The roots of the sequence are the first three components, Yod, Nun, Resh or Virgo, Scorpio, Sol.
The four-part I.N.R.I. formula now reveals a deeper 'core' formula of three parts. This is equated
with the three-letter formula IAO. 'I' is Isis, the divine mother, for Virgo. 'A' is Apophis /
Typhon, the destroyer, for Scorpio. 'O' is Osiris, the slain and risen, for the Sun.
Therefore the metaphysical formula of the IAO is Isis, "Mighty Mother" = Life, Apohis
"Destroyer" = Death and Osiris "Slain and Risen"= Rebirth or Resurrection. So essentially we
find this formula to be the shamanic descent into the underworld and return (which actually
works perfectly with the pathways we are working with, as it is connecting the middle/physical
world with the lower/ astral/ underworld. Therefore we keep the INRI and use the conversion
qualities and equate these aspects to Nordic symbolism, which we find in the three aetts, not in
single runes.
The Aettir not only imply an initiatory structure, each Aett being one degree in a three-degree
system, but they seem to reflect the age-old division of Teutonic tribal society: nurturer, warrior,
and priest/king. This theory of the division of Teutonic societies, is not an occult theory, but an
academic one associated most closely with G. Dumezil.

In its simplest form, the theory is that when the Teutonic tribes swept from the steppes, they
brought with them a society already divided into three groupings. Dumezil traced the structures
of society to their common origin. Where we find the structure remaining in society we can
expect it to exist in its institutions. This is certainly the case with the Germanic tribes.

The divisions Dumezil noted were essentially those of the Germanic pagans. They had nurturers
in their farmers, women, and to an extent, merchants. They had their warriors, the Vikings being
one example, and their priest/kings. Many royal houses traced their ancestry back to one of the
gods. In the pagan era all royalty had divine sanction.

When equating the Aettir to the IAO formula, First we have Freyja, the Aett of the nurturer
which becomes the Mighty Mother and symbolizes Life. Second we have Heimdal, the Aett of
the warrior, which becomes Destroyer and symbolizes Death(although Heimdal is not a negitive
or destructive deity, the warrior is a destroyer of life as well as a preserver of it and ultimately
the path of the warrior always ends in death). Last we have Tyr, the Aett of the Priest/King. In
this aspect, the returned shaman which becomes Slain and Risen, and symbolizes resurrection
and rebirth.

These show a powerful process in the shamanic journey of the initiate. One begins with a sense
of initial enthusiasm. Things proceed easily. This is the Freyja/Life phase. Then 'the destructive
energies of transformation' intervene. The necessary difficulties besetting the undertaking of
spiritual advancement threaten one's original enthusiasm gets depleted when the real work
begins. This is the Heimda/Death stage. Finally, if one perseveres, a breakthrough occurs, and
the initiate succeeds in his journey, rewarding all effort. This is the Tyr/Risen phase.
We also find these energies in the Valknot. The Valknut (pronounced VAL-knoot) is one of
the most widely-discussed yet enigmatic of all of the symbols that appear in connection with
Norse mythology. Visually, its comprised of three interlocking triangles. Archaeologically, it
appears on several runestones and pictorial memorial stones that date from the Viking Age and
stand on the Swedish island of Gotland, as well as on grave goods from the Oseberg ship burial
in Norway. Its name isnt mentioned in any period sources; valknut is a modern Norwegian
compound word that means knot of those fallen in battle and was introduced by Norwegians
who lived long after the Viking Age.
In the archaeological record, the Valknut appears only in connection with the cult of the dead, as
in the aforementioned runestones and ship burial. Similar-looking symbols can also be found on
the cremation urns of the Anglo-Saxons, another Germanic people closely related to the Norse
linguistically, ethnically, and in terms of their pre-Christian worldview and religion.

In most of these cases, Odin is also present. Even in instances where hes not present directly
alongside the Valknut, we often find other symbols that are closely associated with him. For
example, the Anglo-Saxon urns feature depictions of horses and wolves, two animals that are
often the companions of Odin in the Norse mythological tales.
To find associations with both death and Odin together should come as no surprise, since Odin
was, among many, many other things, a psychopomp, which is a figure who ferries the spirits of
the dead to the underworld and then back to the world of the living (also making him the perfect
guide in this ritual journey) as well as the leader of various hosts of the dead, such as the warriors
of Valhalla and of the Wild Hunt.
For this purpose let us look at Odin's connection to Tyr. In one aspect we see Odin as the
Alfather or father of all, this can be understood as Odin is all Gods and All Gods are Odin.
Therefore if all Gods are Odin, then Tyr is Odin. We can also see this through the life, death and
rebirth cycle of the "Dying God" myth. Since Tyr is Odin's son, we see Odin's death and
shamanic descent into the underworld through his "sacrifice of himself unto himself" and reborn
as his son Tyr (also a reference to the INRI of Jesus). In this we see each of the three Aettir as
one point on the triangle, while Odin is the triangle itself. If we look at the Aettir as each being
one of the colors of red, green and blue, when we combine them, we get Odin as the light;
illumination, knowledge, enlightenment.

When we look at the Valknot on a deeper level than just being devoted to Odin and ready to be
taken to Valhalla, we see that it symbolizes the three aspects of Odin; The Shaman, The Warrior
and The Wanderer. It also represents the three sources of Odin's knowledge or wisdom;
Generation (creative, preservative, disintegrative, collecting the properties of all being into the
soul. Integration (unmoving, self-moving, moved, acquire the knowledge of all things). Elevation
(being, life, light, having power over or conquering evil). If we see each as single points, we
have three aspects and three sources, equaling six points (the hexagram).

This symbol is related to metempsychosis or meta-physics, or the ability to transmigrate into


successive bodies (dimensional transitioning).
The Valknot can represent the three levels or planes of consciousness that are related to the nine
realms of the Yggdrasil that Odin transcended during his sacrifice to himself.
The three interlocking triangles that for this symbol represent the three Aetts. If we place the
Runes within this symbol, we can begin to see a cycle of transformation and growth through
Life, Death and Rebirth.
There are three key Runes within this symbol which help us discern more about the symbol
itself. Theses Runes are; Eihwaz, Ingwaz, and Thurisaz.
This can be viewed as the disciplines or process of evolving or developing the soul. The process
by which this is achieved is centered upon the Pillars. It is through the disciplines of these triads
contained in the Valknot and the Pillars that this process of soul development is achieved.
EIHWAZ = (Structure, Backbone, Yggdrasil)
INGWAZ = (Genetics, Ancestry, Completion)
THURISAZ = (Focussed Will, Protection, "Mjollnir",
Destruction/Creation)
Not only do we find the six points of the hexagram in adding these together, but if we multiply
three triads X three primary aspects we get nine; or three planes of existence + three levels of
consciousness+three shamanic worlds = nine; Nine Pillars, Nine Virtues, Nine Worlds.

3 (Triads)
These are the three Aetts of the Elder Futhark Rune row, learned and put into use. This is our
first step in the process of evolution. The knowledge of these Runes lead us toward the truth and
right ways of our ancestors.
3 (Primary Aspects)
Eihwaz: This Rune represents Yggdrasil, also the human spine or backbone which supports the
rest of the body. It is also the psychic equivalent to the backbone. The human backbone has
twenty-four independent vertebrae, clearly showing the importance of each Rune and the
knowledge it contains. This Rune is related with hunting, in this case it would relate to hunting
or searching for knowledge. It is also related to both life and death. In Odin's sacrificial act that
gave him the Runes and the knowledge that they hold, relates to Odin transcending the barriers
of life and death while being suspended between the two. Eihwaz represents our driving force to
evolve, or the structure of our creative process.
Ingwaz: This is a Rune related to fertility and ancestry or genetics. Ingwaz represents our
individual inherited characteristics from our ancestors. Ingwaz is related to reincarnation in that
we are reincarnated into the same tribe or family, or the spiritual evolution of an individual
within the framework of a collective unit. Basically,it represents the continuation of the Tribal or
family Hamingja. Ingwaz can be seen as two Kenaz Runes interlocked or integrated, which
symbolizes a completion or fulfillment. This Rune symbolizes the process of germination and
growth. This Rune shows us our spiritual aspiration to understand and manipulate the natural
environment through the development of religion and magick.
Thurisaz: This Rune relates to focussed energy of "will" directed inward or outward. It is a
fertility Rune that is a direct representation of Thor's hammer, the symbol of life-giving fertility.
Thurisaz is a protective Rune in the sense that it represents both the thorn and Mjollnir. The
thorn is a symbol of masculine creative energy. Mjollnir is the crusher/destroyer which destroys
the old so that the new can spring up fresh. It also represents the aspect of growth and evolution,
to bring about our new selves or "true" selves. In its protective aspect it also points out our
complete devotion and willingness to protect all that we hold sacred and dear, with the ferocity
of an angry Thor. Therefore we have the IAO formula over and over and over.
"I know that I hung on Yggdrassil for nine nights long. Wounded by spear, consecrated to Odin.
Myself a sacrifice to myself upon that sacred tree. The wisest know not the roots of ancient times
whence it sprang. None brought me bread, nor held up horn that I may drink. Down into the
depths I searched. I took up the Runes, raised them with song and from that tree I fell. Runes,
you shall know, and readable staves, very powerful staves, very great staves graven by the
mighty one who speaks carved by the highest host."

Therefore let us keep the INRI giving us the IAO formula of the Valknot and Aettir which
invites Odin to be our shamanic guide, and continue with our exploration of the ritual. The INRI
is followed by instructions to Say, Yod, Nun, Resh, Yod. while inscribeing these Hebrew letters
in the air as you say them. But for our ritual we will convert these into runes. Yod, Nun, Resh,
Yod. being YNRY would therefore be converted as Jera. Naudiz. Rado. Jera.
Then Say, Fehu, Freyja, Mighty Mother. (Inscribe the rune of Fehu in the air before you.)
Then Say, Hagalaz, Heimdal, Destroyer. (Inscribe the rune of Hagalaz in the air before you.)
Then Say, Tiwaz, , Odin Slain and Tyr Risen. (Inscribe the rune of Tiwaz in the air before
you.)
Then Say, Freja, Heimdal, Tyr IAO. (While saying each of the first three names, make again
the runes of Fehu, Hagalaz and Tiwaz.)

Make the sign of Odin Slain. (Stand with the feet together and the arms outstretched to form a
cross.) Look forward. Say: The Sign of Odin Slain.
Make the sign of the Mourning of Freyja. (Point the right arm up, keeping the elbow square.
Point the left arm down, again keeping the elbow square. Look down and to the left, towards the
left hand.) Say: The Sign of the Mourning of Freyja.

Make the sign of Heimdal. (Raise the arms above the head in a 'V' shape. Look up.) Say, The
Sign of Heimdal.

Make the sign of Tyr Risen. (Cross the arms over the breast. Look down.) Say, The Sign of Tyr
Risen.

Repeat the signs of Odin Slain and Tyr Risen while saying, L.V.X., the Light of Rebirth.
LVX is a Latin acronym which is yet another embodiment of the IAO formula. The meaning of
the letters, or symbols, is deeply rooted in Qabalistic mysteries. The L.V.X. explanation is a
three step process:

Step One: Lux = Light

Remember that a Latin "U" is written as a "V", so the word becomes "Lux", which means
"Light". In the Abrahamic creation story, Light is the first object created ("Fiat Lux", the first
words spoken by the YHVH = "let there be light"); yet paradoxically it does not behave like a
physical object, and this points toward the non-"objectiveness" of all other "objects". Light is
also the fastest-moving thing, therefore it defines both the original essence and the ultimate
limitations of this universe.

Step Two: The Negative Existence

The nature of the Divine according to the Qabalah is described in a trinary structure called "The
Negative Existence," comprised of:
Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur.

A loose Translation being:


Ain = "Light" or "Nothing"
Ain Soph = "Limitless Light" or "No Nothing" (i.e., not even the knowledge of "nothing"), and
Ain Soph Aur = "Limitless Light in Extension" or "No Nothing Ever/Always"

Therefore the formula of the Divine is threefold, consisting of varying degrees of pure light. The
second degree is in essence a denial of the first, and the third denies that, by extending through
time. The ancient Qabalists were forced to define divinity this way due to the paradoxes which
inevitably arise in human minds when confronted with 4th and higher dimensional thinking --
this is what the Sepher Yetzirah (the seminal Qabalistic text) is all about.

Step Three: The Death-Rebirth Cycle

These three letters also are Qabalistically and visually/formally linked to the principle dynamic
structure of all Western Mysticism, that of the Death-Rebirth Cycle. According to The Hermetic
Order of the Golden Dawn:

L == Isis Mourning (Osiris slain by Set)


V == Apophis Triumphant (the Rule of Death)
X == Osiris Risen (dead-yet-alive, to rule in the new order)

in our version:
L == Freyja Mourning (Odin slain as a sacrifice of himself, unto himself)
V == Heimdal's descent into Helheim (the Rule of Death)
X == Tyr Risen (the dying God reborn through his son)

Many mystics go so far as to say that this cycle is the only dynamic evident in nature, as the
direct interactions of all forces are governed by it. Here we see two mutually-opposed forces
which interact to create a new, "elevated" state or force. This directly echoes Hegel's "Thesis-
Antithesis-Synthesis" model, as well as Gurdjieff's "Law of Threes" and Buckminster Fuller's
"60-degree zero-vector matrix." Similar structures literally permeate Western consciousness,
lending further credence to the primacy of this dynamic. Obviously, we are not talking about
literal death here, but rather as a metaphor for all sorts of dynamic and transformative processes.
To us it is the symbolic death of the shaman and his descent into the underworld to be resrrected
or recreated as a new and magical being, having went through the life, death, rebirth process, he
walks between the worlds in balance and is equally grounded in each.

Therefore, the meaning of L.V.X. is: May I die and be reborn in the limitless extending Light of
the Divine. Which is a metaphorical meaning: May I change and keep changing unto
perfection.
This completes the Analysis of the Keyword. The letters L, V and X, are understood as being
formed by the signs of Odin Slain, Heimdal and Tyr Risen, respectively as such:
The next phase of the ritual is referred to as ARARITA. The word ARARITA ( )is a
notariqon for the Hebrew phrase "Achad Rosh Achdotho Rosh Ichudo Temurato
Achad", which means "One is His Beginning; One is His Individuality; His
Permutation is One."

The secret of ARARITA is found by splitting the hexagram of fire and water of the
pyramid. Ararita is known to be shown as a hexagram. Fire is male and water is
female and uniting each is the androgynous form of the Divine. In Nordic mythology,
we find these aspects in Ymir. Of course, many heathens would argue and try to place
either Odin as the Alfather or Buri as the first God in this role. But neither of these fit.
Both Odin and Buri are purely masculine deities so they do not fit the male/female
balance here. Since Ararita is the androgynous form of the Divine, Ymir is the only
logical conclusion since Ymir is a hermaphrodite, thus being both male and female,
representing the whole of the hexagram. Ararita is also a sexual term of intercourse
and reproduction, it represents as above and below, which represents the birth of
creation cosmically as well as physically. The doorway is also the opening of the
female organ which gives birth, which of course also represents the birth of mankind
(and of the Gods as well). This we also find in Ymir in that the first man and woman
were formed from Ymir's arm pits and his descendant Bestla was the mother of Odin,
Vili and Ve. Furthermore, lets look at how Ymir embodies Ararita:

One is His Beginning: Ymir is the first creature to come into being in the
Norse creation. Ymir was born when fire from Muspelheim and
ice from Niflheim met in the abyss of Ginnungagap (also
making Ymir the embodiment of the hexagram as the
combination of Ice[Water] and Fire).Therefore Ymir is the first
being and nothing came before him/her, so he/she embodies this
completely.

One is His Individuality: While we see Ymir as a single entity, this is easy to see this
aspect, but it is also a multilayered individuality. On the surface
we see the a hermaphroditic giant who was first among all
things, we also see Ymir as the Earth itself. When Odin, Vili and
Ve killed Ymir, they fashioned Midgard from the courpse; using
the blood for the seas, flesh for the Earth, bones for the
mountains and skull for the dome of the sky. Therefore we can
thus see that Ymir was not truly destroyed but transformed into
Gaia.

His Permutation is One: (the notion of permutation relates to the act of arranging all
the members of a set into some sequence or order, or if the set is
already ordered, rearranging(reordering) its elements, a process
called permuting.) For one is in all and all is in one, Ymir is the
beginning and the end of all things. As previously discussed,
Ymir is the Earth, therefore, not only was Ymir the first being
created from the union of Fire and Ice, but as the Earth, Ymir
shall be created anew after the destruction of Ragnarok. In this
we see that Ymir embodies this permutation in that "he" is the
beginning, the end and everything inbetween.
In the origional Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram, they use it as a means of connecting the
Microcosm (the magician) with the Macrocosm (the cosmos). They did this through connecting
with the energies of the zodiac through the path f the sun as it crossed the constillations of Leo
(Fire), Scorpio (Air), Aquarius (Water) and Taurus (Earth). So they preformed it like this:
Trace the Invoking Hexagram of Fire for Saturn in the East, saying ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the South. Draw the Invoking Hexagram of Earth for Saturn while
vibrating ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the West. Make the Invoking Hexagram of Air for Saturn while saying
ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the North. Trace the Invoking Hexagram of Water for Saturn,
vibrating ARARITA.

But since we are using our version as a doorway to access the lower/astral/underworld we will
convert these zodiac correspondences to runic energies. The Ararita teaches us that all is one,
although there are nine worlds and twenty-four paths, they are all just parts of the one tree. The
roots and the top are one as are the leaves and all its branches. When converting the odiac into
runic correspondences, we find that there are two runes for each astrological "house", one which
rules the solar or day and one ruling the lunar or night. When using the hexagrams for the four
corners that Sunna (Sun) and Mani (moon) ride their chariots through, we find that they are
connected to the runes as follows:

Beginning in the West we have the Elemental Quarter of Water which is of course corresponding
to Aquarius. Aquarius is ruled by both Uranus and Saturn. The Uranus side of Aquarius is
enbodied by Laguz and the Saturn side by Ingwaz. of course we equate these with light and dark
with light being Ingwaz (this being that Ingwaz is the rune of the Hero-God Ing) and Laguz
being dark (which in this case is due to Laguz being the Water rune and therefore a doorway to
the underworld), therefore when drawing the invoking hexagram (Aquarius being the hexagram
of Water), Laguz will be the downward pointing triangle(2), this being the darkness of our
descent into the underworld and the upward pointing triangle will be Hagalaz(1), the light of our
rebirth or ressurection uppon our ascent back from death to life.
In the North we have the Elemental Quarter of Earth which is corresponding to Taurus. Taurus is
ruled by both Proserpine and Venus. The Proserpine side of Taurus is enbodied by Thurisaz and
the Venus side by Ansuz. of course we again equate these with light and dark, with Thurisaz
being dark (since Thurisaz is translated as "giant", "monster", "demon" or "devil", it represents
our symbolic death and the inner demons we must face to be found worthy of resurrection), and
light being Ansuz (since Ansuz translated means a "God" it is reflective of our resurrected,
divine self). Therefore when drawing the invoking hexagram (Taurus being the hexagram of
Earth), Thurisaz will be the downward pointing triangle(2), and the upward pointing triangle will
be Ansuz(1)

In the East we have the Elemental Quarter of Air which is corresponding to Scorpio. Scorpio is
ruled by both Pluto and Mars. Since Pluto is a force for change that can be destructive in its
power, and represents areas of life that must ultimately be transformed as part of the souls
evolution. The Pluto side of Scorpio is therefore enbodied by Algiz. The Algiz rune is the rune
of the essential link or connection with the patterns of divine or archetypal onsciousness. This
represents the pull towards union with the divine. Therefore when drawing the invoking
hexagram (Scorpio being the hexagram of Air), Algiz will be the downward pointing triangle.
The Mars side of Scorpio is embodied by Sowilo. Sowilo is the Sun rune. Sowilo is the rune of
extreme strength, embodying and channelling the power of the sun, who it symbolizes the energy
and the light. Literally, this rune is the vital principle of the solar light. Sowilo represents the
necessary powers to reach his(her) objectives. Sowilo also represents the Illumination, the
understanding of the Mysteries and the full awareness. It is the direct and devastating power
which no obstacle can stop. Sowilo resists the forces of death and destruction, proclaiming the
triumph of the Light over the darkness. Therefore the upward pointing triangle will be Sowilo.
In the South we have the Elemental Quarter of Fire which is corresponding to Leo. Leo is
connected to both Hagalaz and Naudiz. Leo is ruled by both Sun and Moon. The Sun side of
Leo is enbodied by Hagalaz and the Moon side by Naudiz. of course we equate these with light
and dark with light being Hagalaz (Sun/day) and Naudiz being dark (Moon/night), therefore
when drawing the invoking hexagram (Leo being the hexagram of Fire), there is no descent, this
is the eclipse, where sun and moon are equal and we find the doorway of resurrection.

Therefore, to preform the Invoking of the Elemental Quarters, we proceed in this manner:

Facing the West. Make the Invoking Hexagram of Water (visualizing the rune Ingwaz
while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Laguz while tracing the downward
pointing triangle), vibrating ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the North. Trace the Invoking Hexagram of Earth (visualizing the rune
Ansuz while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Thurisaz while tracing the
downward pointing triangle), while vibrating ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the East. Trace the Invoking Hexagram of Air (visualizing the rune
Sowilo while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Algiz while tracing the
downward pointing triangle), while saying ARARITA.
Move clockwise to the South. Draw the Invoking Hexagram of Fire (visualizing the rune
Hagaliz while drawing the first (sun) triangle and Naudiz while tracing the second
(moon) triangle), while vibrating ARARITA.
Return to the center, facing West. Again perform the Analysis of the Keyword.
Perform the Pathworking Ritual for the corresponding world/virtue.
Preform the Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram to complete the Ritual.
To perform the Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram, do exactly as above, including moving
clockwise about the circle, but use the four banishing Hexagrams.
Facing the West. Make the Banishing Hexagram of Water (visualizing the rune Ingwaz
while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Laguz while tracing the downward
pointing triangle), vibrating ARARITA.

Move clockwise to the North. Trace the Banishing Hexagram of Earth (visualizing the
rune Ansuz while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Thurisaz while tracing the
downward pointing triangle), while vibrating ARARITA.

Move clockwise to the East. Trace the Banishing Hexagram of Air (visualizing the rune
Sowilo while drawing the upward pointing triangle and Algiz while tracing the
downward pointing triangle), while saying ARARITA.

Move clockwise to the South. Draw the Banishing Hexagram of Fire (visualizing the rune
Hagaliz while drawing the first (sun) triangle and Naudiz while tracing the second
(moon) triangle), while vibrating ARARITA.
