1. Introduction

1.1 Description
The MTX3GJAVA modems family is an innovative and powerful allinone solution enabling GSM,
SMS, fax and 3G (UMTS/HSPA) high speed data transmission. It has an intrinsic TCP/IP
communicationstackwithInternetServicessuchasTCP,UDP,HTTP,FTP,SMTP,andPOP3.

TheMTX3GJAVAisJavaJ2MEprogrammableandhasacompletesetofinterfaces(RS232,RS485,
USB, GPIO, I2C, GPIO, optoisolated IOs, AnalogtoDigital converter) avoiding need for further
hardware components, shortening time to market and reducing costs. It also has a wide range of
options(dependingonthemodel)allowingittobeusedininfiniteM2Mapplications:

Ultra Low Power: 2.5A power consumption in sleep mode. Ideal in remotebattery

To properly connect the modules USB interface to the host, a USB 2.0 compatible connector is
required. Furthermore, the USB modem driver which is delivered with MTX3GJAVA must be
installedasdescribedbelow.

The USB host is responsible for supplying power across the VUSB_IN line to the modules USB
interface. This is because MTX3GJAVA is designed as a self powered device compliant with the
UniversalSerialBusSpecificationRevision2.0.

The MTX3GJAVA cannot be powered by a USB port. If you need this feature, contact

7. Embedded applications

The MTX3GJAVA can embed an internal application written in popular JAVA language. Java
technology and several peripheral interfaces on the modem allow you to easily integrate your
application. This way, the customer application can be reduced because all the resources
(Microcontroller, Flash & RAM memory and all kind of I/O and bus peripheral) can be used by the
customer. This solution saves the external intelligence with all the associate costs and also saves
spaceandpowerconsumption.

9.1 Where to install the modem

There are several conditions which need to be taken into consideration when designing your
applicationastheymightaffectthemodemanditsfunction.Theyare:

9.1.1 Environmental conditions

The modem must be installed so that the environmental conditions stated in the Technical Data
chaptersuchastemperature,humidityandvibrationaresatisfied.
Additionally,theelectricalspecificationsintheTechnicalDatasectionmustnotbeexceeded.

9.1.2 Signal strength

The modem has to be placed in a way that ensures sufficient signal strength. To improve signal
strength,theantennacanbemovedtoanotherposition.Signalstrengthmaydependonhowclose

aboutpossiblecommunicationdisturbancescanbefoundinsection9.3.5.

When an application is completed, you can verify the signal strength by issuing the AT command
AT+CSQ.

Tip!Beforeinstallingthemodem,useanordinarymobiletelephonetocheckapossiblelocationfor
it.Indetermining thelocationforthe modemand antenna,youshould considersignalstrengthas

In the sections below, issues concerning antenna type, antenna placement, antenna cable, and
possible communication disturbances are addressed. In any event, you should contact your local
antenna manufacturer for additional information concerning antenna type, cables, connectors,
antennaplacement,andthesurroundingarea.

You should also determine whether the antenna needs to be grounded or not. Your local antenna
manufacturermightbeabletodesignaspecialantennasuitableforyourapplication.

9.3.2 Antenna type

Make sure that you choose the right type of antenna for the modem. Consider the following
requirements:
The antenna must be designed for one of the frequency bands in use; please ask your
