Physical Science

Time : 10:30 11:30 am and 4:00 5:00 pm

Date : September 11, 2017
Grade & Section : Grade 12 GA & TVL
Lesson : Ancient Greek Physics and Astronomy
Code : S11/12PS Iva-36-38

I. Objective
1. Write a summary of Ancient Greek two domains view.
2. Tabulate of the different material elements and motion according to the two domains view.
3. List the naked-eye astronomical proofs that the Earth is round or spherical.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Ancient Greek Physics and Astronomy
B. References: Naked eye observations that prove that Earth is round. PhysLink.com (1995 2016).
Retrieved from http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae535.
C. Materials: Pictures, Manila Paper, Pentel Pen, Tape

III. Procedures
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
A. Review
Class, what is our topic last meeting?
Household and Personal Care Products
Very Good! So Class, what is Surfactants?
Surfactants is an active agent, capable of
reducing the surface of liquids. For example, in
washing oil plates.
Very Good! How about the active ingredients
of some antibacterial soap, example
safeguard?
Triclocarban
Excellent!

B. Motivation
Class, I have pictures have.
What do you see?
There is a sequence of the motion/movement of
the sky.
Very Good! So, class, what is the motion of
the sun and the stars on the picture?
There is shifting from one place to another which
is happen within 24 hrs.
Excellent!

C. Lesson Proper
a. Activity
Class, we have our group activity today.
Each group have 2 to 3 members.
Yesterday I have assigned each group to
research and report on their chosen
Greek Philosopher with its lifetime period
and contribution. All of you boys and girls
will participants on the class to give
questions to the reporters. And the
reporters should answer the questions
from their classmates.

Class, listen to the reporter, participate,

and dont be noisy especially when the
reporters perform their activity.
(The students perform their activity)

b. Analysis
Class, in our activity based on the report.
Give example of one Greek philosopher,
lifetime period and their contribution.
(The student give one example of Greek
philosopher, lifetime period and their
contribution.)

c. Abstraction
Class, there are two domain view of the of
the Universe: The celestial and terrestrial
domain.

The celestial domain is perfect hence can

only be made up of the perfect substance
they called either and can only move on
perfect motion: circular in path and constant
in speed. While the terrestrial domain, object
is imperfect and that the tendency of thing to
attain perfection is the cause of their motion.
They also believed that things, depending on
their composition of the elements fire, air,
water, and Earth tend to move toward the
center of the Universe.

Class, what are the differences between the

two domains view of the Universe?
Celestial domain is perfect hence can only be
made up or the perfect substance they called
either and can only move in perfect motion
while terrestrial domain, object is imperfect
motion and they also believed that things,
depending on their composition of the elements
fire, air, water, and Earth tend to move toward
the center of the Universe.

Very Good! Class, if we look on the motion of

the sky, there is a shifting of celestial objects.
And there are two motion based on time that
can prove that the Earth is round.
Diurnal motion of the sky is the appearance
that the objects in the sky moves relative to
the Earths local horizon (moon, sun, stars,
and planets) as observed for one whole day
at the same location on Earth.

Annual motion of the sky is the appearance

that objects in the sky moves relative to the
background stars as observed at the same
time of the day and the same location on
Earth.

Class, if we took pictures of the sky for 24

hours, what will you observe? What is that
motion as we observed for one whole day at
the same location?
Diurnal motion of the sky in which we observe
within 24 hours. The naked eye observation also
that the moon, sun, stars and planets are moves
relative to the Earths local horizon for one whole
day.
Class, there are some following Greek
philosophers shows their contribution about
Physics and Astronomy, and one of that is
Phythagoras (C570 c. 495 BC). According
to him, mathematics as the best way to
express truth about the Universe, Sun, Moon
and Earth one spherical.
Plato (C427 C347 BC), celestial spheres
being crystalline and contains the moon, the
sun and the stars.
Aristotle (384 322 BC), two domain system
with terrestrial domain containing 4 elements
that tries to attain perfection by being natural
location relative to the center of the universe,
the center of the Earth.
Thales (624 547 BC Ionian) believed that
the Earth is a disk floating on an endless
ocean.
Class, who is the Greek philosopher believed
mathematics is the best way to express truth
about the universe? Pythagoras.

Very Good!

d. Application
Class, have you observed the stars
position at night?
Yes, Sir.
So what have you observed when we
look on the stars in specific time and
specific location; after one to more hours,
what will happen on the stars location?
There is shifting on the stars location.
Very good!
Another class, have you observed the
sunrise and sunset here in San Jorge?
Yes, Sir.
Based on your observation, is it a proof
that the Earth is round?
Why?
Yes, Sir because the sun and the stars shift from
one location to another.
Excellent.

IV. Evaluation
I. Matching type choose the correct letter of the correct answer.

the moon, the sun, and the stars. b. Pythagoras
2. Earth is a disk floating on an endless ocean. c. Plato
3. Naked eye observation within one whole day on d. Aristotle
motion of the sky. e. Annual motion of the sky
4. Mathematics as the best way to express truth f. Diurnal motion of the
about the Universe. sky

5. E

II. ESSAY (5pts)

1. Differentiate the two domain view of the Universe?
Answer.
Celestial domain is perfect hence can only be made up of the perfect substance they called
either and can only move in perfect motion while terrestrial domain, object are imperfect and
that the tendency of thing to attain perfection is the cause of their motion.
