Radio Programme Proposal / Treatment for CRiStLE Productions BACKGROUND OF THE BEATLES


The length of the radio programme will be a duration of 30 minutes and will be formatted in the style of a documentary.


From A Hard’s Day Night to Let It Be, The Beatles have topped the charts, influenced many and had thousands of fans worshiping them, but what is their real story? This documentary explores the roots of their music and how they became the Beatles band we know today.


The documentary will target an audience of both genders and will appeal to a younger audience of 15 to 29 year olds, as they most likely would know of The Beatles but not where they begun and the steps to their success. There is also a secondary audience of 65+ year olds as during the 1960s, this would be the age group that would have been a fan of the band.


After researching the agency Coalition Talent, an ideal presenter to voice the documentary would be Angela Scanlon or Abbie McCarthy. Both presenters are known for their warm and fun style, which I think will appeal to the delivery of the documentary. I think it is important that the presenter is fairly young, as the show will be targeting primarily teens and listeners could loose interest with an older presenter. The Beatles fans are of both genders but I think the majority is female, so I think having a female presenter would improve the mode of the address of the documentary.


The idea presenter will voice the show in a informal style, with colloquial language that will appeal to the younger audiences. The Beatles are known as a rock band but didn’t stick to one genre of music, though their style overall was upbeat. The documentary will compliment and match that style, with have a lighthearted nature and informal style. This would be done with music jingles and music beds. The only parts of the documentary that may come across as formal will be any serious topics of the band’s history.


The documentary will be prerecorded with added features of interviews. I think this will be suitable and more efficient as the presenter for the documentary will not be experienced. In comparison to a live recording show, there are risks of slips ups or inappropriate language, which could then not be edited out. Whereas, having a pre-recorded show allows for mistakes to be edited out and more the point, leaving the documentary to be of a higher quality.


The documentary will be aired on CRiStLE SOUND radio station. If the documentary aired on another radio station, a preferred station would be Radio 1 which would air on time for on a Sunday evening at 8 pm. This is because this is where a majority of radio listeners settle down after their meal and tune into something interesting or relaxing. On a Sunday, many people would be getting ready for the working day ahead and would want an early night, making 8 pm an appropriate time for the target audience.


In terms of resources, there will be one presenter to voice the documentary and a maximum of four contributors, which will possibly be featured interviews of fans of the band or from a music teacher’s opinion. To guide the show, there will be a producer who will make sure the running order is running expectedly to the required quality of a professional radio station.

In the studio, there will be a mixing board, microphones with pop shields, the software to record the documentary on, scripts, stands and speakers.


The location of the radio documentary will be in at Netherhall Sixth Form at CRiStLE SOUND radio station.


The radio documentary will be aired for 30 minutes, making the full recording time an hour. The editing process will take about 2 to 3 hours to successfully add in interviews, music beds,

titles and Vox Pops, making sure the documentary to be good radio station quality.


The content will focus on the band’s background, their success and how their music has progressed throughout the years.

Their roots began in Liverpool, England when John was in a band called the Quarry Men when he met Paul McCartney in 1957. At 14 years old, George Harrison became the next member of the group in 1958.

The band went through several names; ‘Johnny and the Moondogs’, ‘The Silver Beetles’, ‘The Beatals', The Silver Beatles’ and eventually, ‘The Beatles’.

In 1960, the Beatles went to Hamburg, Germany.

Brian Epstein became their manager in1962

In 1970 was when the band ended.

The Vox Pops will be interviews with fans and as a fun feature, there will possibly be a quiz where people have to guess the name of the song when played a clip.


The music that will be played will be from The Beatles album, with upbeat songs that will keep the documentary in a good tone. These songs could be ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘Hey Jude’ or ‘A little Help From My Friends’, as these are well known songs and there has been many versions of covers made by fans. Other songs will be used for music beds, intros and titles from a copyright free websites to continue the style of the show.

These are some prices of radio equipment I found and would have to invest in to record a high quality radio documentary. However, in media department at Netherhall Sixth Form, the equipment is already available to the student and the editing software is free.

Copyright Issues:

For the documentary I would like to have one of The Beatles’ song feature, however there would be copyright issues. For a ‘Short-Term Restricted Service Licence’ [RSL] from Ofcom, the licence fee for 2017 is £71, plus £41 for each day of the broadcast.

The licence covers the right to:

broadcast and simulcast from the UK copy commercial works into programmes and trailers

copy our members’ music for broadcast onto databases and servers.

For a ‘Long-Term Restricted Service Licence’ [RSL] from Ofcom, the rights are the same however the licence is a fixed annual fee, which in 2017, is £640. The licence is usually granted for a maximum of 28 constructive days. For hospital radio stations, the fee is £420.


There is no transport required as the crew, presenters and any interviewees are from Netherhall Sixth Form which is where the radio station is located.


In terms of actors/presenters, they are from the sixth form and will hopefully participate in the documentary for free.
