CO: SWBAT add large numbers without manipulatives

LO: SWBAT orally state the two big ideas of addition

Big Idea Focus: Always add like units, when you have too many make an exchange.

Explore and Experiment

Teacher Students

Hey everyone, partner up and when I say go, Students in pairs:

take turns rolling the dice and have your Student A: (rolls dice to show numbers 2,4)

partner give you the sum of two numbers on 6!

the dice that you just rolled. Questions? Go!

Student B: 6, (rolls dice to show numbers

3,3)

6!
Student A: 6

Find a new partner. Ready, set, go!

Students find a new partner and repeat the

activity.

Switch partners and repeat activity.

This is so fun! I wonder how you add really

large numbers?

I love that idea! Lets add really large

numbers! Come gather around me boys and

girls.

Students move over to teacher and gather

So what manipulative would you guys like to around the manipulatives.

use? Base 10 blocks or popsicle sticks?

Ok! Lets use base 10 blocks. First Im going Base 10 blocks!!

to show you how were going to set up this

problem using base 10 blocks. Its similar to

how we set up basic fact problems. How did

we set out basic fact problems?

We laid out manipulatives for each one and

Yes! That is very similar to what were going then we added them together.

to do with large numbers. Jimmy, give me a

large number!
536!

Can you show me what that looks like with

base 10 blocks?

Jill, give me another large number!

Can you show me what that looks like with 91!

base 10 blocks?

Do we need anything else?

Thats right! We put the two numbers into Oh yeah! A plus sign and an equal sign!

manipulatives with the plus sign between them

and the equal sign after.

Add the two groups of manipulatives together

and then make proper exchanges?

This is the set up. Any ideas of how we might

solve this problem?

Thats a great idea! Sarah, Bob, will you two

come up and add these two groups of

manipulatives and start making exchanges?

Remember to add like units, and when there

are too many to write make an exchange.

Sarah: We have 7 ones so we dont need to

make an exchange for those.

Bob: Look we have 12 rods so we need to

make an exchange for one flat with 2 rods left

over which would be 120!

Sarah: Once we add that 100 we exchanged 10

rods for we will have 6 flats.

So whats our answer?

The answer is 627!

Great! Sarah will you make that with base 10

blocks and then label the answer.

Thank you, Sarah! Now, boys and girls turn to

the person sitting next to you and tell them

what you remember about how we did this Classroom gets noisy because all of the
problem. Ready? Go! students are discussing about how to add large

numbers using manipulatives.

Should we try to do more problems?

Okay, I need two more people to give me large Yes!!

numbers and set them up.

You 2 come join these two and help them work

and solve this problem. Make sure youre

labeling your numbers in the set up and final

answer so we can know what youre doing.

Now, you 4 come over here and make up two

large numbers to add and set them up and then

solve it.

The rest of you come here with me and we can

do one together. Give me two numbers and set

them up!

Okay now lets solve it!

Who wants to make up their own big numbers

to add and work the problem by themselves?

Get in groups of 2 and go work on some more Children get into groups of 2 and create their

problems. Help your friends get the right own problems and solve them using base 10

answer and know what theyre doing Ill be blocks labeling the set up and the final answer

checking in with all of you to make sure you

know what youre doing.

What patterns are you guys seeing? (asked to

each group of students)

Ive noticed you guys are doing really well at

adding large numbers with manipulative, lets

keep an organized record.

Identify Patterns

Teacher Students

As youre doing these problems, what kind of

patterns do you see?

When we reach 10 we exchange for one larger

unit.

The answer is always bigger than to two

numbers we are adding.
We always have a plus sign and an equal sign.

We only add together the units that are the

same!

Wow! Those are some awesome patterns. Lets

write them down so we can remember them.

Keep an Organized Record

Teacher Student

If we were to write down a record of what 1

weve been doing what do you think that 536
would look like? + 91
627

That looks great boys and girls!

State the Hypothesis

Teacher Students

Teacher, weve been doing a lot of problems

using manipulatives and I think we get how to
do it without manipulatives!

Awesome! Lets see what youve come up

with!

346
+ 71

We need to add the ones first. 6+1=7 so we

will write that under the ones place.

346
+ 71
7

Then we add the tens. 4 tens + 7 tens = 11 tens

which is too many to write in the tens column
so we will exchange 10 tens for 1 hundred and
then write the one ten thats left over in the
tens place and put a one in the hundreds place
to show we made an exchange.

1
346
+ 71
17

Now we need to add the hundreds. 1 hundred +

3 hundreds = 4 hundreds. So we will write 4 in
the hundreds place.

1
346
+ 71
417
Nice work. Why dont you go and test this
hypothesis, to make sure that it always works.

Okay!
Test the Hypothesis

Teacher Students

Teacher, where should we find problems to test

our hypothesis?

Thats a great question! You can use your

textbook on pages 206-207. You can use your
smart phones to look up problems. Or you can
make up problems for each other.

Great idea. How will we know if were getting

the right answers?

Since youre in a group of 2 one of you should

solve it using your hypothesis while the other
uses manipulatives. Then check your answers
to see if theyre the same. Do this with
multiple problems so you know if it always
works.

Thanks teacher! We will do it a bunch of

times!

Ill come back by to check on you to see how

youre doing.
